A dedicated unit still earns its place in two situations: driving abroad on an expensive data plan, and long days where the phone is needed for other things and cooking itself in a windscreen mount.

The case for the phone

The mapping is better and it stays better

Continuously updated roads, live traffic, and a search that finds a business by name rather than requiring a postcode. None of that is close.

Offline maps close the gap that matters

Downloading the region before the journey means the route survives a tunnel, a valley or a border. It does not give you live traffic — that still needs data — but it does mean the navigation never simply stops.

Where it disappoints

Heat. Navigation runs the screen at full brightness, both radios and the processor at once, in direct sun behind glass. Add wireless charging and it is close to a worst-case thermal situation. A hot phone throttles, then shuts down, and sustained heat is also one of the fastest ways to age its battery.

Interruptions. A call, a notification, a low-storage warning — all of them land on the device that is currently telling you which exit to take.

Car phone mount

A vent mount keeps the phone out of direct sun and in moving air, which is the actual fix for the overheating. Check local rules before mounting anything on the windscreen itself.

The case for the dedicated unit

It does one job and cannot be distracted from it

No calls, no notifications, no app deciding to update. For long-distance driving, that single-purpose behaviour is the real argument, more than the mapping.

It does not need a signal or a data plan

Maps live on the device. Abroad, on a plan that charges for roaming, or in genuinely remote areas, that is straightforward rather than clever.

Dedicated sat nav

Update the maps at home before the first trip — a unit out of the box or out of a drawer often needs a large download, and doing it on hotel wifi is miserable.

Where it disappoints

Stale maps, unless you keep them updated. Weak search, so you need an address rather than a name. And traffic that is usually behind what a phone knows.

Powering whichever one you chose

Both fail the same way on a long day: flat.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

Offline maps on the phone you already own. Free, and it removes the main failure. Do this before buying anything.

The car's built-in navigation, if the car has it. Older mapping, but a screen in the right place, permanently powered, and immune to your phone ringing.

A printed route for the awkward part. Old-fashioned and completely reliable for the final few miles where the coverage is worst and the turnings matter most.

Who should pick which

Phone if your driving is mostly domestic and well-covered. Most people, most journeys.

Dedicated unit if you drive abroad regularly, drive for a living, or spend long days where the phone is needed for other work.

Both if the trip is long and unfamiliar — the unit navigates, the phone stays free for traffic, parking and finding somewhere to eat.

The mistake to avoid

Mounting a phone in direct sun and expecting it to last the drive. The heat is not a quirk; it is the predictable result of running everything at once behind glass. Move it to the vent, drop the brightness, and stop wireless charging while navigating in summer.

The second mistake is assuming offline maps also mean offline traffic. They do not. They keep the route alive when the signal dies, which is a different and more important promise. The related expense nobody plans for on a foreign drive is covered in tolls, vignettes and parking abroad.

What does a dedicated unit genuinely do better?
