A multi-port charger serves USB devices. An extension lead serves plugs. They are sold to the same traveller for the same complaint and they solve different halves of it.

If everything you carry charges over USB, the charger is smaller, lighter and enough. If a laptop brick, a camera charger or anything else with a mains plug is in the bag, only the lead helps.

And the answer that beats both, more often than either: a longer cable. The hotel problem is usually the socket's position rather than the socket count.

The case for the multi-port charger

It replaces the pile of bricks

Three chargers become one. In a bag where volume is the binding constraint, that is usually the single biggest reduction available.

GaN is a genuine advantage here

Gallium nitride switches more efficiently than silicon, so the charger runs cooler and can be made considerably smaller for the same output. For travel specifically, that is real rather than marketing.

What it cannot do

Anything with a mains plug. A laptop with its own brick, a camera charger, a travel kettle — none of those care that you have four USB ports.

Where it disappoints

Bulk, relative to everything else in a travel kit.

Restrictions. Some hotels — particularly older buildings and some serviced apartments — restrict extension leads, and surge-protected ones attract additional restrictions in air travel. Worth checking rather than discovering.

The thing neither does, and it matters

Neither converts voltage.

A travel adapter changes the plug shape and nothing else. Whether a device can run on the local supply is determined by the device, and it is printed on its own label — most modern chargers accept a wide input range, and plenty of appliances with heating elements or motors do not.

Plugging a single-voltage appliance into a different supply through an adapter is how travel kettles, hair tools and shavers get destroyed, and the adapter is blamed.

Universal travel adapter

Changes the plug shape only. Check the input range printed on each device before it goes in the bag — that is the label that decides whether it survives.

Universal adapters are the default and not always the right call. They are bulky, they hold a heavy plug at an angle in a socket that may already be loose, and the all-in-one designs have a poor reputation for shutter mechanisms that do not fully engage.

For a single destination, a plain regional adapter is smaller, sits flatter and has nothing to select wrongly. Carry the universal one for a multi-country trip and the regional one for a fortnight in one place.

And where the room has one socket and you are not carrying a lead, a splitter is the minimal version of the same fix. It has no cable, so it cannot reach a bedside table — but it turns one socket into several without the bulk, and it is the item most likely to still be in the bag on the fourth trip.

Outlet splitter

Adds sockets without adding cable, so it solves quantity and not reach. Check the combined draw against its rating before running a laptop supply and a kettle-class device from one.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

A longer cable. The genuine answer to most hotel rooms. The socket is behind the bed or across the room, and two metres of cable solves that for less bulk, less weight and less money than a lead.

Retractable USB-C cable

Length is what the hotel problem usually needs. Check it supports the charge rate you want — some retractables are limited.

Charging in sequence overnight. Most travel kit needs one full charge a day, and a single port delivers that while you sleep. Free.

Carrying less that needs charging. The most effective and least popular option.

Who should pick which

Multi-port charger if everything charges over USB. Most travellers, most of the time.

Extension lead if you carry a laptop with a mains brick, or work away and need a desk-like setup in a room that has no desk.

Both if you work away regularly. Charger for the devices, lead for the sockets, one adapter for the wall.

Neither if a longer cable fixes it. Try that first — it is smaller, lighter and cheaper.

The mistake to avoid

Assuming the adapter makes anything safe to plug in. It changes the pins. The voltage question is answered on the device's own label and nowhere else, and getting it wrong destroys the appliance and occasionally more than that.

The second mistake is buying a multi-port charger on its headline wattage. That figure is nearly always what a single port delivers on its own; plug in a second device and the split may leave your laptop charging slower than the mains brick you left at home.
