Sized by measurement, not by shoe size — and the wrong pressure is worse than none.
Graduated compression works by being tightest at the ankle and easing up the leg. A sock that is too tight, that rolls into a band at the top, or that bunches behind the knee concentrates pressure in one spot, which is the opposite of the mechanism.
So the useful advice is unglamorous: measure your ankle and calf, use the manufacturer's chart, and if you have any of the conditions listed below, ask a doctor rather than a product page.

The problem, as it appears
Legs that feel heavy and swollen after a long flight, shoes that are tight on landing, and ankles that have visibly changed shape by the end of a long-haul sector.
That is the discomfort compression socks are sold for, and for that purpose they are a reasonable product with a real mechanism.
Why buying them casually disappoints
Sizing by shoe size. Most listings offer S/M/L against shoe size because it is easy, and calf circumference varies enormously between people with the same feet. Graduated compression depends on the gradient being right along the leg, and a sock sized by the wrong variable does not reliably produce it.
Buying on the compression number without knowing what it means. Higher is not better. The lower "travel" ranges are what is typically sold for flight comfort; higher classes are normally recommended by a clinician for a specific condition.
Putting them on at the gate. They go on before your legs have swollen, not after — which is both easier and the point.

What actually matters
1. Measuring, properly
Ankle circumference at its narrowest, calf at its widest, ideally in the morning before any swelling. Then against the manufacturer's chart rather than a generic one.
If you fall between sizes, the manufacturer's guidance for that case is worth following rather than guessing upward.
Travel compression socks
Measure ankle and calf and use the maker's own chart — shoe-size sizing is convenient and it is not what graduated compression depends on.

2. Fit that stays where it should
The failures to watch for, all of which concentrate pressure:
- Rolling down into a tight band at the top
- Bunching behind the knee
- Digging in at the top edge
Any of those means the size or the style is wrong, and continuing to wear them is not the answer.
3. Knowing when this is not a shopping decision
Ask a doctor first if you have diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, neuropathy, a history of blood clots, significant or asymmetric swelling, or skin that breaks or heals poorly.
In those situations compression is a clinical decision — the right class, the right fit and whether it is appropriate at all. That is genuinely not something a product page should be deciding, and this one is not going to.
What else helps, for free
Consistently recommended, costs nothing, and worth doing regardless of what is on your legs:
- Get up and walk periodically when it is safe to do so.
- Ankle rotations and calf raises in the seat.
- Stay hydrated, which is easier with a bottle you filled after security than with cabin service.

Compression addresses legs. The other two things that decide whether a long flight is survivable are head support and light.

Support at the side of the neck is what stops the head dropping; a pillow that only fills the gap behind does very little for sleeping upright.

The mistake to avoid
Buying the highest compression available on the assumption that more is better. It is a specification, not a quality rating, and higher classes exist for clinical reasons. Wearing an inappropriate pressure for hours is not a neutral experiment.
The second mistake is wearing a pair that rolls down. A sock that has become a tight band around the widest part of the calf is doing the exact opposite of graduated compression, and it is more likely to be uncomfortable and less likely to help than bare legs would have been.
