Motion Night Lights for Dark Hallways

Two things decide whether one of these earns its place. Sensors detect movement across their field far better than movement towards them — so a light facing along a corridor sees you late, which is the complaint people describe as "it comes on when I have already passed it". And a rechargeable light has a routine attached, which is why so many end up in a drawer.

The problem, as it appears
A hallway, a landing or a set of stairs that is dark enough to be a hazard and not worth turning the main light on for. Shoes get left where they are tripped over, and the light switch is at the wrong end.
A stick-on motion light seems obviously right, and a meaningful share of them are bought twice.
Why the obvious fix disappoints
Placement, first. Passive infrared sensors work by detecting a heat source crossing between their detection zones. Movement across the field triggers reliably; movement straight at the sensor crosses very few zone boundaries and triggers late or not at all.
Mounted at the end of a corridor facing down it — which is the intuitive position — the sensor is in its worst case.
Recharging, second. A rechargeable unit has to be taken off the wall, carried to a cable, charged and returned. That is four steps at a moment when nothing is wrong except a dim light, and the honest completion rate is low.
And the ambient threshold. Most units only fire below a set darkness. A hallway with a streetlight through a fanlight may never reach it, and the light appears faulty when it is behaving exactly as designed.

What actually matters
1. Angle across the walking direction
Mount it so you cross the sensor's field rather than approach it head-on — on a side wall pointing across the corridor, or at the turn of a stair rather than the top of it.
This single change fixes most "it triggers too late" complaints.
2. Low, not high
Low mounting puts light on the floor where the hazards are, keeps it out of your eyes at night, and happens to improve the sensor geometry because people move across a low field more obviously.
3. Power that suits the routine
Replaceable batteries for anywhere awkward to reach — a change once or twice a year with no carrying involved.
Rechargeable only where the unit is easy to unclip and there is a charging habit nearby.
Plug-in wherever a socket exists at the right point, which is the best of the three and rarely available where the hallway is dark.

Check whether the ambient-light threshold is adjustable and how it is powered. Angle it across the corridor rather than along it — that is what fixes late triggering.

4. Warm and dim, deliberately
A cool white light at full output wakes you properly. For a night trip that is the wrong outcome, and several units offer a low warm mode intended for exactly this.
The options, and who each suits
Battery stick-on for stairs, landings and cupboards. The default, and the one that keeps working because the maintenance is trivial.
Rechargeable where it clips off easily and you will actually do it.
Plug-in where there is a socket. Nothing to maintain at all.
A smart bulb in the existing fitting if the hallway already has a light and the problem is only that nobody turns it on. Scheduling or a motion routine reuses the fitting you have.

If the fitting already exists, a scheduled or triggered bulb avoids adding hardware to a wall entirely. Worth checking before buying anything stick-on.

The mistake to avoid
Sticking it to a dusty skirting board and expecting the pad to hold. The supplied adhesive is usually adequate and is usually applied to exactly the sort of surface that defeats it. Clean with isopropyl alcohol, press firmly, and let it sit before hanging the weight on it — the same rules as every other adhesive mount.

The second mistake is buying on lumens. A hallway at night needs very little light, and the brightest unit is the one most likely to be unpleasant at 3am and to need charging most often. Placement beats output here by a wide margin.
