The problem, as it appears

The desk is full, the underside is already used, and there is still a headset, two controllers, a pile of cables and a set of small tools with nowhere to live. Above the desk is a large blank wall doing nothing.

The reason it stays blank is usually the fixings — a reluctance to drill, particularly when renting, and adhesive products that promise to solve that.

Why adhesive strips disappoint

They work, initially, and their failure mode is the problem rather than their strength. Foam adhesive under sustained load creeps, warmth accelerates it, and the release is sudden — it holds, and then it does not, with whatever was hanging on it.

Above a desk that is a specific hazard, because what is below is a monitor and a machine.

The second issue is removal. Adhesive on emulsion paint frequently takes paint with it, and on textured plaster it never bonds properly in the first place. A pair of small filled holes is a better outcome for most rentals than a patch of missing paint.

What actually matters

What is underneath. This is the consideration people skip. A headset falling onto a desk is irritating; onto a monitor or an open case it is expensive. Position things so a failure is harmless.

The type of wall. Solid masonry takes a plug and screw and holds indefinitely. Plasterboard needs a proper cavity fixing, and the rating on those assumes a straight downward pull rather than the outward leverage a hook applies — so derate generously.

Weight and leverage together. A hook holds a load a few centimetres out from the wall, which multiplies the force at the fixing. The item's weight is not the whole story.

Reachability. The rule from getting headsets and controllers off the desk applies: above eye level and behind you means it stops being used.

The mistake to avoid

Hanging anything directly above the monitor or the machine. It is the natural position — the wall behind the desk is right there — and it is the one spot where a fixing failure has a cost. Offset to the side, where a fall lands on the floor.

The second mistake is trusting a plasterboard fixing's stated rating at face value. Those figures assume a load pulling straight down against the wall, and a hook holding something out from the surface applies leverage the rating does not describe. Choose a fixing rated well beyond the weight, and put the heavy things into a stud.

On a cool, smooth, well-prepared wall, often for a year or more. On emulsion paint, or a warm wall, or textured plaster, considerably less — and the failure is sudden rather than gradual.
Do you need to find a stud for wall storage?
For anything with real weight, yes. For a headset or a controller, a plasterboard fixing rated well above the load is sufficient. The rating on the packet assumes a straight downward pull, which a hook does not apply.
Is a pegboard on the wall better than one clamped to the desk?
