Waterproof Phone Pouches and What They Are For

These are excellent at the ordinary case — a phone that needs to survive a downpour, a beach, a kayak splash or a poolside drop. That is what they are designed around and they do it well.

Submersion is a different claim, and it rests entirely on the seal being closed properly every single time. Which is why the useful advice is a free test rather than a specification: seal it empty with a folded tissue inside and submerge it for a few minutes.

Also worth knowing before you plan around one: the touchscreen mostly does not work underwater.

The problem, as it appears

A beach, a boat, a rainy hike or a water park, and a phone that is both essential — tickets, maps, photographs — and the least waterproof thing you own.

The pouch is the obvious answer, and it is a good one for most of those.

Why the obvious assumption disappoints

An IP rating is a laboratory result. It describes performance under defined conditions: fresh water, a stated depth, a stated time, with the seal closed correctly. It does not describe seawater, chlorine, moving water, pressure at depth, or a closure that had sand in it.

Leaks are nearly always the closure. Not the material — something caught in the seal, or clips not fully engaged. That is a user-checkable failure, which is exactly why testing the individual pouch matters more than trusting the model.

And the screen stops responding. Capacitive touchscreens detect the electrical properties of a finger, and water against the screen interferes. Pressing through a pouch underwater frequently does nothing, or the wrong thing. Most people end up using a volume button as a shutter.

What actually matters

1. The tissue test, every trip

Fold a tissue, seal it inside the empty pouch, submerge it for a few minutes, open it and check.

Costs nothing. Tells you about the pouch in your hand rather than about the model — and repeat it after any trip where sand or grit was involved.

2. Closing it clean

Nothing across the seal. Not a lanyard, not a corner of a case, not a grain of sand. Wipe the closure before sealing, and check the clips are fully engaged along their length rather than at the ends.

Take a bulky case off. It makes the seal harder to close cleanly and can hold the closure open at the corners.

3. Whether it floats — with the phone in it

Different question from whether the empty pouch floats. Worth establishing in a sink before it matters, because a perfectly sealed pouch at the bottom of a lake has done its job and lost your phone.

4. Accepting the residual risk

Even tested and closed correctly, submersion is a risk you are choosing. If the phone genuinely cannot be replaced or the trip depends on it, the honest answer is to leave it somewhere dry and take a cheap camera.

The options, and who each suits

A pouch for rain and spray. The strongest case and the one most people actually need. Reliable, cheap, and the failure cost is low.

A pouch for swimming, tested each time, with the acceptance that it is a risk rather than a guarantee.

A dry bag for the whole kit if the concern is a bag rather than a phone. Different product, more capacity, no touchscreen compromise.

The mistake to avoid

Treating the IP rating as a guarantee for your specific pouch on that specific day. It certifies a design under laboratory conditions. Your pouch has been in a bag, possibly with sand, and is being closed by someone standing on a windy beach. The tissue test bridges exactly that gap and takes two minutes.

The second mistake is planning to use the phone underwater. The screen will mostly not respond, so any plan that depends on tapping through the plastic mid-swim needs a volume-button workaround worked out beforehand — on dry land, where finding out is free.
