Where Smoke Alarms Actually Go
Placement decides whether an alarm works, and the two rooms people fit them in are the two rooms they should not. What the ceiling has to do with it.

Placement is most of whether an alarm works, and the two rooms people reach for first are the two it should not be in.
A smoke alarm in a kitchen or a bathroom goes off during cooking and showering. Nothing about that is a fault — it is doing what it was designed to do, in a room full of the thing it detects. What follows is predictable: someone takes the battery out, and the flat now has a decoration on the ceiling.
This guide is orientation, not a specification. Requirements for alarms differ by country, and by whether you own or rent. Your local fire service publishes guidance for your building and it is free — use it, and use the instructions supplied with the alarm you buy, in preference to anything here.

Why the ceiling, and not the wall
Smoke rises, reaches the ceiling, and spreads sideways across it before the room fills. An alarm on the ceiling meets that layer first, which is the entire reason for the convention.
High on a wall is a fallback where a ceiling fixing genuinely is not possible. It responds later.
Corners are poor. Air circulates badly in the angle where ceiling meets wall, and smoke can take noticeably longer to arrive there.
So are vents, extractor fans and draughty spots. Anything that moves air can carry smoke past the sensor instead of into it.

Where they go
Circulation space — hallways and landings, the routes you would use to get out. This is the placement that protects the escape route rather than a single room.
Rooms where a fire is likely to start — a living room with electronics, a room with a heater.
Not the kitchen. A heat alarm is the device designed for a kitchen. It responds to a rapid rise in temperature rather than to smoke, so cooking does not set it off.
Not the bathroom. Steam behaves enough like smoke to trigger optical sensors.
Smoke alarm

The two things that matter more than the model
1. Interlinking
An alarm sounding in a hallway is not reliably audible through a closed bedroom door, especially to someone asleep, and especially across floors. Interlinked alarms all sound at once, wherever the detection happened.
In anything larger than a one-bedroom flat this changes the outcome more than any other choice on this page.
2. The end-of-life date
Sensors degrade. An old alarm that chirps when you press test is confirming its sounder works, not its sensor. Every unit carries a replace-by date printed on it, and that date is the one that matters.
Carbon monoxide is a different device and a different position
CO does not rise the way smoke does — it mixes fairly evenly with room air. So CO alarm placement follows the appliance, not the ceiling: near anything that burns fuel, at the height the manufacturer specifies, and in rooms where you sleep if there is a fuel-burning appliance in them.
A smoke alarm does not detect CO, and a CO alarm does not detect smoke. Owning one is not covering the other.
Carbon monoxide alarm
Detects something a smoke alarm cannot, and goes where the fuel-burning appliance is rather than on a ceiling. A digital display showing current and peak readings tells you more than a light does.

If you rent, getting this right is your landlord's responsibility in most places, and it is worth asking about in writing.
What is free and matters as much
Testing them. On whatever schedule you will actually keep.
Closing doors at night. A closed internal door slows fire and smoke spread considerably, and it costs nothing.
Knowing the way out, including with the lights off, and keeping that route clear of the things that accumulate in hallways.
Asking your fire service. Many run free home safety visits and will tell you exactly where alarms should go in your specific layout. That is better information than anything on the internet, including this.
The mistake to avoid
Fitting one in the kitchen and removing the battery a fortnight later. It is the most common way a home ends up with no working alarm at all, and it starts with a reasonable-sounding decision about where a fire is most likely to begin.
