The vice is rarely the constraint. What the bench is bolted to, and whether the car still fits past it, decide this more than jaw width ever does.

In a small garage the vice is rarely the constraint. What the bench is bolted to decides whether the vice is usable, and where the bench sits decides whether you can still get past the car. Both matter more than jaw width.

A very good vice on a bench that flexes is a poor vice in practice, because every hammer blow goes into moving the bench rather than into the work.

The problem, as it appears

A garage that is one car wide, with a workbench along one side, and a job that needs something held firmly — a bracket to be straightened, a bolt to be cut, a bush to be pressed, a part to be filed.

Everything you own is designed to be held in one hand while the other works, and this job needs two hands and something that does not move.

Then the second problem: the car is in the garage most of the time, so anything permanently occupying bench depth is also permanently narrowing the route past the wing.

Why buying a bigger vice disappoints

Because capacity is not what limits home use, and weight is a real cost in a small space.

Four to five inches of jaw handles nearly everything a car owner clamps. Larger vices are heavier, occupy more bench, project further into the walking route, and get used at full capacity essentially never.

The second reason is that the vice's rigidity is only as good as what it is bolted to. Mounting a heavy vice on a bench that was not built for it produces a bench that walks across the floor under load — which is worse than a smaller vice on a solid mounting, and considerably more annoying.

What actually matters

The mounting is the specification

More important than the tool, and the part that gets no attention.

The vice needs to bolt through the bench top into something substantial, with washers or a backing plate underneath to spread the load. Bolting into a thin top pulls the fixings through it the first time you lean on a bar.

The bench itself needs to be either heavy or restrained. A light bench that is bolted to the wall is better than a heavy one standing free, because the wall stops it walking.

If the bench flexes when you push down on the vice, that flex is where your hammer energy is going.

Position it for the car, not for the bench

The small-garage decision, and it is made with the car in the wrong place.

Measure with the car parked, not with it out. That is the tight condition and it is the one you live with. Two things to check:

The walking route. A vice at the middle of a bench narrows the gap at the widest part of the car. At a corner it usually does not.

The handle swing. The handle drops and swings, and in a tight garage it can reach a door or a wing. That is a scratch waiting to happen every time you use it.

A folding bench is a real option with a real limit

Honest about both halves.

For light clamping — holding something to file, to drill, to work on with hand tools — a folding bench with a clamp-on vice is genuinely adequate and it disappears when the car needs the space.

For anything involving a hammer or a long bar, it is not. A folding bench absorbs and rebounds, and it can move under you — which is a safety issue rather than an inconvenience.

Soft jaws, before the first job you care about

The cheapest thing on this page and the one people buy after ruining something.

Hardened serrated jaws mark anything softer than themselves, permanently. Aluminium, brass, plated fasteners, finished parts and anything chromed all come out with a serration pattern pressed into them.

Cast iron for most people

Cast iron is stiffer for the money and damps vibration better, which matters when you are hitting something held in it.

Its failure mode is that it cracks rather than bends when overloaded — usually from a cheater bar on the handle or from hammering on the jaws rather than on the work. Steel tolerates abuse better and costs more for the same rigidity.

For home car work, cast iron and not abusing it is the right answer.

A swivel base earns its keep in a small space

It costs some rigidity and some working height, and it lets you turn the work rather than walk around it — which in a garage where you cannot walk around it is the whole point.

If the bench is against a wall with a single approach, take the swivel.

Standing at it is the unglamorous part

A vice is used standing still, on a concrete floor, often for a while.

What it is genuinely for

Worth listing, because it justifies the space.

Holding a part while you work on it with two hands. Straightening brackets. Cutting and filing. Pressing small bushes with the jaws. Holding a stubborn fastener while you work on it rather than the other way round — which is frequently the answer when a bolt will not free with the part still on the car.

Cleaning and working small parts, which is easier held than chased around a bench — cleaning small car parts without ruining them.

The order to work in

  1. Check what the bench top can take before choosing a vice.
  2. Measure with the car parked, not with it out.
  3. Check the handle swing against doors and panels.
  4. Choose four to five inch jaws unless you know you need more.
  5. Bolt through with a backing plate, not into the top alone.
  6. Restrain the bench to the wall if it is not heavy.
  7. Buy soft jaws with the vice, not after.
  8. Put a mat where you will stand.

The mistake to avoid

Bolting a heavy vice to a bench that cannot take it. The vice is fine and the assembly is not — the top flexes, the fixings pull through, and the bench walks under load, which means the hammer blow you just delivered went into moving furniture. It is a disappointing outcome that reads as a bad vice, and the fix is entirely on the bench side.

The second mistake is positioning it with the car outside. The garage feels spacious, the bench looks fine in the middle of the run, and the first time the car is parked the vice is exactly where the widest part of the wing needs the walking space to be — with a handle that swings toward the paint. The tight condition is the normal condition, and it is the one to measure in.

Questions people actually ask

What size vice does a car owner actually need?
Smaller than instinct suggests. Four to five inches of jaw width handles almost everything a home mechanic clamps — brackets, small castings, hoses, fasteners being worked on. Larger vices are heavier, take more bench, and are used at full capacity approximately never.
