Freeing a Stuck or Rusted Bolt Without Breaking It

Why WD-40 is not a real penetrating oil, what actually works its way into a seized thread, how long to let it soak, and where silicone spray belongs instead.

A bolt that will not turn is not a strength problem. Leaning harder on a breaker bar snaps the head off or twists the shank in half, and now the job that was annoying is a job that needs a drill, an extractor, or a trip to someone with both. The fix that actually works is almost always chemical and almost always slower than anyone wants it to be.

Why the can already in the garage does not do it

Most garages already have a can of general-purpose spray lubricant, and it is the first thing reached for. It is not the wrong instinct — it is the wrong product. A general-purpose spray is formulated to displace water and leave a light protective film, not to wick into a rust bond under capillary action. It can loosen a fastener that is merely stiff. It rarely moves one that is actually seized.

A dedicated penetrating oil is thinner, with lower surface tension specifically so it can travel into a gap you cannot see — the microscopic space between corroded threads where rust has effectively welded two pieces of metal together. That difference in formulation is the entire reason a "real" penetrant outperforms a general spray on a genuinely stuck fastener.

What actually matters

Time, more than product. The single biggest variable in whether a stuck bolt frees is how long the oil is left to work, not which brand is in the can. Spraying and immediately reaching for a wrench wastes most of what the product could do.

Mechanical help alongside the chemistry. A few sharp taps with a hammer on the bolt head — not the surrounding metal — uses vibration to help the oil work further into the thread. Working the fastener back and forth in tiny increments, rather than forcing it one direction, does the same thing.

Heat where it is safe. Differential expansion between the bolt and the housing it is threaded into can break a rust bond that oil alone will not, because the two metals expand and contract at slightly different rates and that mismatch physically cracks the corrosion between them. This is a last resort before drilling, not a first move, and it is a genuine hazard near fuel lines, wiring looms or plastic components.

Penetrating oil is the tool for a bolt that will not turn at all. Apply it to the joint, give it real time — reapplying once or twice over hours rather than one heavy dose — and add mechanical persuasion (light hammering, small back-and-forth movements) rather than sustained force in one direction.

Silicone spray lubricant

For things that already move but squeak or bind — not for a seized fastener.

Silicone spray solves a different problem entirely: a dry-film lubricant for parts that already move but do so with friction — door hinges, weatherstripping, seat rails, latch mechanisms. It is rubber- and plastic-safe in a way many petroleum-based products are not, which is exactly why it is the better choice for those jobs and the wrong choice for a rusted thread. One genuine caution: silicone overspray drifting onto bare metal or a masked panel is a known cause of "fisheye" defects if that panel is painted later, so keep it away from anywhere due for bodywork.

The mistake to avoid

Reaching for more force before you have given the chemistry time to work. A snapped bolt head or a twisted-off shank turns a job that needed patience into one that needs an extractor, a drill and usually a re-tap of the hole — considerably more work than waiting overnight would have cost. If a fastener has not moved after a proper soak and mechanical persuasion, the next step is heat or professional extraction, not more torque on the same wrench.

Is WD-40 a penetrating oil?
Not really. WD-40's own literature describes it as a water displacer and light lubricant first; it can help a little on a mildly stuck fastener, but its viscosity and surface tension are wrong for the job a dedicated penetrant does — wicking into the microscopic gap between a rusted bolt and the thread it is seized in.
How long should I let penetrating oil soak in?
Longer than feels reasonable. Minutes do very little; hours to overnight is where a genuinely seized fastener starts to move. Reapplying once or twice during that wait helps more than one heavy application at the start.
Does heat help?
Yes, when it is safe to apply — the differential expansion between the bolt and the surrounding metal as they heat and cool can crack a rust bond that oil alone will not.
