Can You Change Engine Oil Through the Dipstick Tube?
Extraction genuinely works and skips the ramps and the mess — the honest catch is what stays behind, and it depends on where your sump pickup sits.

Pulling the used oil up through the dipstick tube instead of dropping it out of the bottom sounds like a shortcut that ought to have a catch. It mostly works, and the catch is more specific than "it doesn't get everything."

The problem, as it appears
An oil change on a car where the sump plug is awkward — behind an undertray, seized, or simply somewhere you cannot get a pan under without ramps you do not own.
Extraction through the dipstick tube gets offered as the easy alternative, usually without mention of what it leaves behind.
The short answer
Extraction works. The tube goes down the dipstick channel to the bottom of the sump and a vacuum pulls the oil up. No ramps, no going underneath, no drain pan balancing act, no plug to strip.
Whether it gets all the oil is a question about your engine's sump, not about the tool.
What actually decides it
Where the sump's lowest point is. If it sits directly under the dipstick tube, the tube reaches it and the result is close to a full drain. If the sump has a deep pocket somewhere else, or baffles the tube cannot get past, some oil stays behind — and no amount of technique changes that.
Where the filter is. This is the argument that actually settles it for most people. A top-mounted cartridge filter means the entire service happens from above and extraction is a clear win. A spin-on canister underneath the car means you are going under there regardless, and once you are under there the drain plug is right next to you.
How neglected the engine is. Draining takes the last of the oil out of the very bottom, which is where heavier settled debris sits. On a well-maintained engine this is a marginal difference; on one with unknown history it is a reason to drain at least this time.

Where extraction is straightforwardly better
Awkward fills and hard-to-reach reservoirs. Gearbox and differential oil, power steering, brake reservoirs on cars where a bottle will not fit — this is where suction and a thin tube beat gravity outright, and it is covered properly in moving awkward fluids.

A sump thread that has already been repaired. Every drain-plug cycle is another chance to strip an alloy thread or forget a crush washer. Not touching it at all is a real benefit on a car where that has already gone wrong once.
Anywhere you cannot safely raise the car. This site does not advise on jacking or supporting a vehicle, and extraction sidesteps the question entirely by not requiring the car to leave the ground.
The mistake to avoid
Treating extraction as a way to skip changing the filter. It is not, and a fresh charge of oil running through a filter that is already at the end of its life gets you a fraction of the benefit you paid for.
The other one: doing it cold to save the drive. Cold oil crawls up the tube, the job takes three times as long, and people give up partway and conclude the tool does not work.
