Trolley Jack vs Ramps vs Axle Stands

Two of these lift a car and one holds it up. Getting that distinction wrong is the single most dangerous mistake a home mechanic can make.

Two of these lift a car. One holds it up. They are not interchangeable and the difference is the most consequential thing on this site.

A trolley jack is a hydraulic device — seals that can fail, a release valve that can be knocked. It is a lifting tool, and it is not a supporting one. Axle stands are a mechanical column with a pin through it and nothing to leak. Nothing goes under a car held up only by a jack, ever, for any length of time.

The case for ramps

Fewest failure modes of anything here

The car drives on and sits on a solid moulded block. No hydraulics, no pins, no release valve, nothing to lose pressure. For the jobs they suit, ramps are the simplest and least error-prone option available.

They are also the fastest — seconds rather than minutes — which matters more than it sounds, because the arrangement people actually use is the one that is not a chore.

The limitation is absolute

The wheels stay on. So ramps cover oil changes, exhaust work and inspection, and are no use whatsoever for brakes, suspension, or anything requiring a wheel off.

The one thing to check before buying

Approach angle. A car with a low front bumper hits the ramp before the tyre starts climbing, and the usual improvisation — planks in front of the ramps — introduces exactly the instability the ramp was chosen to avoid.

Brakes, suspension, wheel bearings, anything behind a wheel. That is a large share of home jobs and ramps cannot do any of it.

The jack lifts; the stands take over; the jack stays lightly in contact as a backup rather than being removed entirely.

Rating, and the margin worth having

You are supporting a portion of the car rather than all of it, so the arithmetic suggests less capacity than people assume. Then add margin anyway — ratings assume ideal, centred loading, and real placement is rarely ideal.

Placement is the part that goes wrong

Support points are frequently not the same as jacking points, and both are in the handbook. A stand under a sill seam, a suspension arm or the sump is how cars get damaged and how they come down.

Set both stands to the same pin height. An unequal pair puts the car on a slope, and a car on a slope wants to move.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

Chocks, which are not optional and cost very little. A car raised at one end can roll, and a handbrake acts on one axle only — possibly the one now in the air. This is the cheapest item on the page and the one most often skipped.

Not lifting the car at all. The genuinely cheapest and safest answer where it applies. Top-side oil extraction removes the reason to get underneath for an oil change — changing oil through the dipstick tube covers what it can and cannot reach, honestly, including where it falls short.

Paying someone with a lift. For anything needing sustained time underneath, an hour of workshop time costs less than the equipment and is considerably safer. There is no shame in this and it is frequently the correct answer.

Who should pick which

Ramps if your jobs are oil changes and inspection and your car can climb them. Simplest, fastest, fewest ways to go wrong.

Jack and stands if you need a wheel off. There is no alternative for brake and suspension work.

Both if you do both kinds of job. They are not expensive relative to what they protect.

Neither if the surface is sloping or soft. Tarmac in summer is soft enough to matter, and a stand that sinks on one side is a stand that is no longer vertical. That is not fixable with a better product.

The rules that apply whichever you choose

  1. Level, solid ground. Concrete. Not a driveway slope, not soft tarmac, not gravel.
  2. Chocks on the wheels staying down, both sides.
  3. Handbrake on, in gear or in park — remembering the handbrake may act on the raised axle.
  4. Manufacturer's points, from the handbook, for both lifting and supporting.
  5. Stands at equal height, pins fully engaged.
  6. Shake the car firmly before going under it. If anything moves, start again.
  7. Leave the jack lightly in contact as a secondary support.
  8. Never rely on a jack alone, for any duration.

The mistake to avoid

Using the jack as the support because the job is only going to take a minute. It is the exact reasoning behind most of the serious injuries in home mechanics, and the duration is irrelevant — a hydraulic seal does not know how long you intended to be under there. Stands cost a fraction of a jack and take thirty seconds to place.

The second mistake is the jack supplied with the car. It is designed for one emergency wheel change on a level roadside, it is narrow-based and minimal by weight-saving intent, and it is not a workshop tool. Can I work under a car on just a jack?

Comfortably above the portion of the car you are lifting, not above the whole car's weight — and then more margin than the arithmetic suggests, because ratings are for ideal loading and real loading is rarely ideal. Buying two tonnes for a 1.4-tonne car is not overkill.
