Clay is the last decontamination step, and it marrs paint every time. Both halves matter. It works by dragging bonded contamination across the surface until it releases into the clay, so anything you could have dissolved chemically first is now being dragged — and the dragging is what produces the fine hazing people discover afterwards in direct sun.

So the sequence is: wash, then chemical decontamination, then clay, then correct or protect. Claying first is the common mistake and it is the expensive one.

The problem, as it appears

The car is clean and the paint does not feel clean. Run a hand over the roof or the bonnet and there is a fine grittiness that survives washing, and wax will not sit properly on it.

The plastic bag test makes it obvious: put your hand in a thin sandwich bag and run it lightly over a horizontal panel. The bag amplifies texture your fingertips filter out, and paint that looked perfect suddenly feels like fine sandpaper.

That texture is bonded contamination — industrial fallout, rail dust, overspray, brake dust that has travelled — sitting proud of the clear coat.

Why claying first disappoints

Because clay is a mechanical process and mechanical processes drag.

The medium picks a particle up by shearing it off the surface, and until it releases into the clay it is being pushed across the paint. Every particle you did not remove chemically first is a particle taking a short journey across your clear coat with pressure behind it.

Chemical decontamination removes most of that load without touching the paint at all. Iron removers dissolve the embedded iron; tar and bug removers dissolve the organic and bituminous deposits. What is left for the clay is the genuinely bonded, genuinely mechanical remainder — which is a much smaller job and a much gentler one.

There is a second reason the instinct fails. Clay removes contamination and it does not remove scratches. People reach for it expecting a finish improvement, get marring instead, and conclude the clay was faulty. It was doing exactly what it does; the expectation was wrong.

The order, which is most of the answer

  1. Wash normally, to remove everything loose. Claying over loose grit is claying with sandpaper.
  2. Iron remover, which handles the embedded metallic particles — most of what makes paint feel gritty. Covered in iron fallout remover and what the purple means.
  3. Tar and bug remover, on the lower panels and the front end specifically. That is in bug and tar remover.
  4. Rinse and re-wash, because you have just put chemicals on the paint.
  5. Clay, on what is left.
  6. Polish or accept the marring — see below.
  7. Protect, because every step above has stripped whatever was there.

Skipping straight to step 5 is the version most people do, and it works, and it costs more marring than it needed to.

What actually matters

Lubrication is the entire safety story

More important than which clay you buy.

The clay must never touch dry paint. A generous, slick film is what lets contamination release into the medium rather than being ground against the surface, and the moment the panel starts to drag is the moment you are causing damage.

Water alone is not enough — it sheets off and leaves the clay gripping. A dedicated lubricant or a very generously diluted rinseless wash both work; the test is that the clay glides with almost no effort.

Bar or mitt is a real decision

Both work. They fail differently.

A mitt covers a panel several times faster, survives contact with the ground, and rinses clean under a tap. It is the sensible default for a whole car, and the practical objection is that it does not conform to curves, badges and tight recesses.

A bar conforms to anything, can be kneaded to expose a fresh face when it loads up, and costs less to start with. Its weakness is absolute: a dropped bar is finished. It has picked up grit from the ground, that grit is now embedded in something you are about to press against paint, and rinsing does not remove it.

Synthetic clay mitt

Faster over large panels and it survives being dropped, which is the failure mode that ruins paint. Rinse it frequently as it loads up.

The honest answer for most people is a mitt for the panels and a small bar kept for the awkward parts.

Work small, keep it flat, use no pressure

Three details that decide how much marring you end up with.

Small sections. A panel at a time is too much; the lubricant dries before you finish.

Straight lines, not circles. Straight-line marring is far less visible than circular marring under a point light source, which is why it is the standard advice for any contact step on paint.

No pressure. The weight of your hand is the correct force. Pressing does not remove contamination faster; it embeds it.

Fold or rinse constantly. A loaded clay face is dragging what it already collected. On a bar, knead to fresh. On a mitt, rinse it.

Expect to correct afterwards, or accept the haze

The step people are not told about, and it is why professional results look different.

Claying marrs. On a dark car in direct sun the fine hazing is visible; on a light car it is usually not. The proper sequence finishes with a light polish, which removes the marring the clay just created.

If you are not going to polish, that is a legitimate choice — clay anyway, accept slightly hazed paint that is now genuinely clean, and know that the wax will sit better and last longer than it would have.

Scratch-removal compound

For the light hazing clay leaves behind. A finishing polish rather than a cutting compound is what this step wants.

Protect immediately afterwards

Non-negotiable, and it is the step that gets skipped because the car already looks finished.

Washing, chemical decontamination, claying and polishing have collectively removed every bit of protection the paint had. Bare clear coat is more vulnerable than it was before you started, and it will re-contaminate faster.

Spray wax

The minimum acceptable finish to a decontamination session. Bare clear coat re-contaminates faster than protected paint, so stopping here undoes part of the work.

Test before deciding you need it

Free, takes ten seconds, and it stops you marring paint for nothing.

Wash and dry the car, then do the plastic bag test on a horizontal panel. Gritty means clay. Glass-smooth means the paint is already decontaminated, and claying it is marring with no benefit at all.

Most cars want this once or twice a year. A garaged car that does low mileage may want it far less often, and the paint will tell you.

The order to work in

  1. Bag test a horizontal panel to confirm it is needed.
  2. Wash and dry normally.
  3. Iron remover, then tar and bug remover.
  4. Rinse and re-wash.
  5. Clay with generous lubricant, small sections, straight lines, no pressure.
  6. Rinse or knead the medium constantly.
  7. Bag test again to confirm it worked.
  8. Polish the marring, or accept it.
  9. Protect, the same day.

The mistake to avoid

Dropping the bar and carrying on. It is the most common serious error in detailing and it happens because a dropped bar looks fine — the grit it collected is embedded, invisible, and about to be pressed into your clear coat with your hand behind it. The bar costs a fraction of the paint correction that follows, and the only correct response is to bin it. This is the strongest argument for the mitt, which survives the same accident.

The second mistake is claying a car that does not need it. Clay marrs by design, so applying it to paint that already passes the bag test is damage with no upside — and it is done routinely because claying feels like thoroughness. The bag test is free and it is the difference between a decontamination step and an unnecessary contact step on a soft clear coat.

Questions people actually ask

What does clay actually remove?
