Tiny Tools That Prevent Expensive Damage
Six cheap, single-purpose tools whose entire value is that they stop you damaging something costly while doing a job that was supposed to be routine.

There is a specific category of tool whose value has nothing to do with what it does and everything to do with what it stops you doing. Each one here costs very little and exists because the obvious improvisation damages something that costs a great deal.

The pattern they share
None of these tools makes a job faster. Every one of them makes a job survivable — because in each case the natural way to proceed without it puts force, or a probe, or a socket somewhere that quietly damages a part far more expensive than the tool.
The damage is usually invisible at the time. That is what makes this category worth naming: you do not find out you needed the tool until weeks later, when the fault it caused shows up as something else.

A battery terminal puller
The improvisation is levering the clamp off with a screwdriver. The lead post it is levered against is soft, sealed into the battery case, and connected to the plates underneath — and rocking a clamp off can damage that internal joint. The result reads fine at rest and collapses under cranking, which looks exactly like a worn-out battery you then replace.

Back-probe pins
The improvisation is pushing a multimeter probe into the front of a connector. The probe is much thicker than the pin the terminal is sized to grip, so the terminal spreads and does not spring back. The connector still works — until vibration and heat find the loose grip you created while diagnosing something else.

A spark plug socket
The improvisation is a deep socket. A plug is ceramic with a metal shell, and a plain socket loads that ceramic sideways with nothing cushioning it. A cracked insulator is a misfire on one cylinder that you then spend an evening chasing.

Not a damage-prevention tool at first glance — until you note that many fine-wire iridium plugs are damaged by being gapped at all, and that a coin-style gauge is the thing most likely to lever against that delicate electrode.

A valve core tool
The improvisation here is adding tyre sealant to a slow leak. If the leak is the valve core rather than the tread — which it very often is — sealant coats the inside of the wheel and frequently fouls the TPMS sensor. A part that costs almost nothing becomes a job that does not.

An LED test light
The improvisation is an incandescent test light, which is the older and cheaper version of the same tool. The bulb draws real current to glow, and pulling bulb-level current through a circuit designed for the milliamps a control module expects can damage the module.

The honest caveat
Buying all six at once is the wrong instinct. Each earns its place the first time you face the job it belongs to, and a drawer of single-purpose tools bought speculatively is its own kind of waste — the one this site is generally sceptical of.
The sensible version is buying the relevant one before starting the job rather than partway through it, which is the moment people usually improvise instead. For the tools that save time rather than prevent damage, small tools that save annoying garage jobs covers a different six.
