The Spark Plug Tools to Have Before You Start
A normal socket cracks the porcelain and an ordinary extension pulls the plug off-axis — the cheap specific tools exist because the failure is expensive.

Changing spark plugs is a job people do with a normal socket set, and the two tools that make it safe cost very little compared to the way it goes wrong.

The problem, as it appears
A plug change that looks like a twenty-minute job and carries a genuinely expensive failure mode — a plug cross-threaded into an aluminium head, or a ceramic insulator cracked by a socket that was not the right one.
Both happen during the job rather than before it, which is why the tools matter more here than the plugs do.
Why a normal socket is the wrong tool
A spark plug is a ceramic insulator with a metal shell crimped around it. A plain deep socket grips the metal hex with nothing taking up the slack, so any sideways load goes straight into the porcelain.
A dedicated spark plug socket has either a rubber insert or a magnet inside. Both do the same two jobs: hold the plug concentric so it cannot be loaded off-axis, and hold onto it so it comes out of a deep well rather than dropping back down it.
Cracking an insulator is not always obvious at the time. It shows up later as a misfire on one cylinder, which you then spend an evening diagnosing.

The habit that prevents the expensive failure
Start every plug by hand.
Cylinder heads are usually aluminium and plugs are steel. In a contest between the two, the head loses, and a stripped plug thread in a head is a repair on an entirely different scale from the job you were doing. If the plug well is too deep to reach by hand, put the socket on a length of rubber hose and turn that — the hose slips before it can generate enough torque to cut a new thread.
Only once it is finger-tight several turns in does a ratchet belong anywhere near it.
Gapping: check, do not assume
The gap sets how far the spark jumps, which sets the voltage the ignition system has to generate. Wrong in either direction produces a misfire under load.
Many plugs arrive pre-gapped, and that is not the same as arriving correct for your engine. The sensible habit is to check every plug against the specification.
The genuine exception worth knowing: many fine-wire iridium and platinum plugs should not be gapped at all, because bending that delicate centre electrode damages it. Check the plug maker's own guidance before adjusting anything.

A wire-type gauge reads a gap more accurately than a coin-style one, and is far less likely to lever against a fine-wire electrode.

What actually matters
Work on a cold engine. Removing plugs from a hot aluminium head is the other well-known way to damage threads.
Do one at a time if the leads or coils are not obviously labelled, so nothing gets reassembled onto the wrong cylinder.
A little dielectric grease inside the boot. It keeps moisture out of the connection and stops the boot bonding to the ceramic, which is what causes a boot to tear when it next comes off.

The mistake to avoid
Reaching for penetrating oil on a plug that will not move. Whatever you spray runs down the well and into the cylinder when the plug comes out. If a plug is genuinely seized, the safer approach is a cold engine, patience, and gentle back-and-forth movement rather than force in one direction — the general principles for a stuck fastener apply, with the important difference that the hole leads directly into the engine.
