Cordless vs Corded Tools for Car Work
The same trade repeats across inflators, ratchets, polishers and lights, and it is almost never argued once. Here it is, argued once.

Corded for duration. Cordless for position.
That is the rule, and it holds across inflators, ratchets, polishers and lights. Anything that runs continuously — polishing a bonnet, inflating from flat, lighting a bay for an afternoon — wants a supply that does not deplete. Anything used in bursts, under a car, in a wheel arch, or away from a socket wants no cable.

Two rows carry the decision: sustained output and works away from a socket. Everything else is a refinement.
Where corded wins clearly
Polishing
The job that exposes cordless most. A machine polisher runs for tens of minutes at load, and thermal and battery limits arrive well before the panel is finished. Swapping packs mid-panel is worse than inconvenient — it interrupts the work at exactly the point where consistency matters.
The exception is small correction work, which is genuinely a burst job.

Lighting a working area

Sustained inflation
Inflating a tyre from flat, or several tyres in a row, is a duty-cycle problem. A 12V compressor running off the car is drawing on a supply the engine replenishes.

Where cordless wins clearly
Anything in an awkward position
Under the car, inside a wheel arch, behind the engine, in a footwell. A cable is not merely inconvenient there — it snags, it drags across paint, and it is one more thing to manage while your hands are occupied.
Anything used in bursts
A ratchet spinning fasteners off is a burst tool by nature. Corded versions of this exist and almost nobody wants one.
Cordless ratchet
A burst tool by nature. It removes the repetitive part of the job, and the pack lasts easily across a session of that kind of work.

Anything used away from the car
Topping up a bicycle, a wheelbarrow, an air bed on a campsite. There is no socket and no car, and a cordless inflator is simply the only option.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough
An extension lead and the tool you already own. Most home car jobs happen within a few metres of a socket, which is the assumption cordless marketing quietly removes from the conversation. If your car lives in a garage or on a driveway beside the house, the cable is a minor irritation rather than a constraint, and corded tools cost less for the same sustained output.
The car itself, for anything in the boot. A 12V tool cannot be flat when you need it, and that is worth more in an emergency than any specification. A cordless tool stored for emergencies has been self-discharging since the day you put it there.
Not committing to a platform at all. If you will own one or two cordless tools, buy the better individual tool and ignore battery ecosystems entirely. The platform argument only starts paying at three or more, and committing early to a system that turns out not to suit you is the expensive version of this decision.
Who should pick which
Corded if your car is within reach of a socket and your jobs run long. Cheaper, unlimited, and never needs charging first.
Cordless if you work away from power, or in positions where a cable is genuinely in the way.
Both, deliberately, if you do a range of work. That is most people who do more than one job a year, and the split is the one at the top of this page.
Neither, yet, if you are buying your first powered tool for a specific job. Buy the best tool for that job and let the platform question arrive when you have three tools rather than one.
The mistake to avoid
Comparing peak figures. Modern cordless tools match or beat corded ones on a specification sheet, because peak output is what specification sheets measure and lithium cells deliver impressive peaks.
The question that decides real work is how long can it do that — the duty cycle, the thermal limit, and what happens to the pack in the cold. Those figures are published less often and matter more.
