The question is which failure you would rather have

A 12 V compressor draws from the car's battery. Its failure mode is a car with a dead battery — in which case you have a bigger problem and are reaching for a jump starter anyway.

A cordless inflator draws from a tool battery. Its failure mode is a tool battery that self-discharged in a cold trunk over six months, which is a far more likely event and one you can do nothing about at the roadside.

The hose is the difference nobody mentions

Two numbers in that table describe completely different tools: a 16-foot hose against roughly 20 inches.

The corded compressor is a box you put on the ground near the battery. You walk the chuck to each wheel and the box stays where it is. The cordless unit is a handheld tool — the hose is long enough to reach from your hand to the valve and no further, so you carry the whole thing to each wheel and hold it while it runs.

Neither approach is wrong. But it explains why people who own both reach for different ones: the cordless is faster for one tire, and the corded is less tiring for four.

The accessory socket trap

Worth restating because it catches out most people buying their first inflator: socket-powered units frequently do not work on older cars. The VIAIR 88P draws up to 20A, and many lighter circuits are fused at 10A or 15A — lower still on anything pre-1990s. The result is a blown fuse partway through the first tire.

Battery clamps sidestep this entirely. Cordless sidesteps it by not touching the car. It is only the convenient middle option — the plug-in socket unit — that has the problem, which is unfortunate, because it is the one most people buy.

Where the cordless one is genuinely better

Being fair to it, because the highlighted column above is about one specific scenario:

  • Higher pressure ceiling. 150 PSI against 120 PSI. Irrelevant for car tires, useful if you also inflate anything that runs hard.
  • Lighter in the hand, and no leads to unspool or drape over a wing.
  • No hood to open, which in rain, poor light or a tight parking bay is a bigger deal than it sounds.
  • It works away from the car entirely — bicycles, wheelbarrows, sports equipment, an air bed.

When cordless is clearly right

  • You already own the battery platform. This is the whole argument. Bought from scratch purely to inflate tires, the economics stop working.
  • You inflate things that are not cars.
  • You will actually maintain the battery. Cycled and charged, a cordless unit is the more pleasant tool by a wide margin.

When the 12 V compressor is clearly right

  • The car is older, and its accessory circuit is not to be relied on.
  • The unit will live in the trunk untouched for long periods. No battery to go flat.
  • You may need all four tires from properly flat, where a published duty cycle and unlimited energy matter more than convenience.

What we would carry

For an older car that must be self-sufficient: the 12 V compressor, with clamps, checked once at home so you know the hose reaches the rear valves. Sixteen feet is generous, but a battery in the trunk changes the geometry.

If a cordless platform is already in the garage, carrying both is not unreasonable — they fail in different ways, which is the definition of useful redundancy.

If this is not right for you

A mains compressor
If inflation only ever happens at home, a small mains unit outperforms both on duty cycle and cost, and neither portability argument applies.
A foot pump
Slow and tiring, but completely immune to flat batteries, blown fuses and electronics. A reasonable backup in a car that sits for months.
The forecourt air line
Free and adequate for routine top-ups. It is the roadside case, not the routine case, that justifies carrying anything.

Questions people actually ask

Which is faster?
Close enough that it should not decide the purchase. Both take minutes rather than seconds for a car tire, and duty cycle — whether it can do four without stopping to cool — matters far more than the time for one.
Can a cordless inflator do a full set of tires on one battery?
Often, for modest top-ups on a passenger car with a larger-capacity battery. Taking four tires from significantly flat is a different demand, and it is where a car-powered unit's effectively unlimited energy supply becomes the deciding advantage.
Does the hose length actually matter?
More than most buyers expect. The VIAIR 88P ships with a 16-foot air hose, so the unit sits by the battery while you move the chuck to each wheel. A typical RYOBI ONE+ inflator has a hose around 20 inches long, which means you carry the whole tool to each valve and hold it there. Neither is wrong, but they are different physical jobs.
Which reaches a higher pressure?
The cordless one, usually. RYOBI's ONE+ inflators are rated to 150 PSI against the VIAIR 88P's 120 PSI. For passenger car tires this is irrelevant — you are working well below either ceiling — but it does mean "the corded one is more powerful" is not a safe assumption.
Which is lighter to carry?
The cordless tool, at 1.35 pounds bare as RYOBI publishes it, against 4.75 pounds for the VIAIR. Add a battery and the gap narrows, and add a charger for a trip and it closes further. Weight is a weaker argument here than it first appears.
Is it unreasonable to own both?
No, and it is the most defensible answer if a cordless platform is already in the garage. They fail in genuinely different ways — one needs the car to have a working battery, the other needs you to have remembered to charge a pack. Two devices that fail independently is what redundancy actually means.
