If your monitor has a spare input and a usable way to switch it, buy a USB switch and use the monitor's own input selection. A full KVM is for when the monitor cannot switch conveniently, or when you want one button to move everything — and its risk is a refresh-rate ceiling you will not discover until it is on the desk.

Where the money actually goes
The USB switch is buying a multiplexer for peripherals and nothing more. It is a simple device, it cannot degrade your display because it never touches the video path, and that immunity is its main advantage for anyone gaming at high refresh rates.
The KVM is buying the video path too, and that is where both the cost and the risk concentrate. Passing a high-bandwidth video signal through an inexpensive switch is genuinely demanding, and the places manufacturers economise show up as capped refresh rates, dropped signals on wake, or occasional handshake failures that require unplugging something.
Neither is buying convenience for free. Both interrupt USB when they switch, which means devices re-enumerate and anything running notices.
Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough
- A monitor with a spare input. Increasingly common, and it does the video half without any risk to signal quality.
- High-refresh gaming. A USB switch cannot cap what it does not carry.
- Two monitors. Dual-head KVMs are expensive; the monitors' own inputs are not.
- Occasional switching. Two button presses is a trivial cost a few times a day.
Where the cheaper option falls short
- A monitor whose input switching is buried three levels into an on-screen menu, which turns a two-second action into a genuine irritation.
- A monitor with only one input, where there is nothing to switch between.
- Wanting a single physical button for the whole desk, which is a legitimate preference.

Whichever way the peripherals get shared, they still have to be powered properly at the desk — and a switch feeding several devices from one upstream port runs into the same current budget as any hub. How many peripherals one USB hub handles covers that arithmetic.
