What Goes Wrong With a Gaming PC After Year One

Dust, heat, noise, a sagging graphics card and one expensive power event — the problems a gaming PC develops after it is built, in order of how likely each is.

Almost nothing that goes wrong with a gaming PC in its second year is a component failure. It is dust, heat, noise, gravity and one bad night on the mains — and every one of those is cheap to prevent and irritating to fix after the fact.

Dust is the problem you will definitely have

Not might. Will. A desktop moves a large volume of room air through a small number of intakes, and everything suspended in that air — skin, textile fibres, pet dander, cooking grease if the kitchen is close — arrives at the heatsink fins and stays there.

The consequence is not immediate. It is gradual and it compounds: a fin stack with a felt layer across its face has less surface area touching moving air, so the fan spins faster to compensate, so it pulls more air through, so it collects dust faster. By the time the machine is audibly louder than it was, the process has been running for months.

Two things actually help. Filtering the intakes catches most of it before it lands anywhere it matters, and getting the tower off the carpet stops it inhaling the dustiest air in the room. Heat is what dust turns into

Thermal throttling is a design feature, not a fault. A processor that reduces its clock speed to stay within its temperature limit is doing exactly what it was built to do, and no damage occurs.

What matters is that throttling is a symptom. A machine that ran a game at full speed for an hour last year and now drops after twenty minutes has changed, and the change is almost always airflow: blocked filters, a case shoved against a wall, or a desk enclosure with no rear gap. Replacing thermal paste is the fix people reach for first and it is rarely the actual cause — paste degrades over years, not months, and a repaste on a machine with a clogged intake buys very little.

Noise is the problem you notice at eleven at night

Fan noise and cooling are the same trade viewed from opposite ends. More airflow means more noise, and almost every "quiet" fix costs some thermal headroom.

The useful distinction is between whine and rattle. Whine is aerodynamic — fans spinning faster than they need to, usually because a fan curve is set aggressively or because the intake is restricted. Rattle is mechanical — a hard drive vibrating against a steel chassis that then behaves like a sounding board, or a panel that was never quite seated after the last upgrade. They have completely different solutions, and reaching for the wrong one is why people buy expensive fans that do not fix the noise they were bought for.

The graphics card is the problem that arrives slowly

Modern cards are heavy, cantilevered off a slot that was specified for a fraction of that mass, and held at one end by a bracket screwed to thin steel. They droop. The droop is progressive, it looks bad long before it does anything, and by the time there is a visible gap at the slot the connector has been under bending load for a long time.

Whether that matters is genuinely contested, and the honest answer is that catastrophic failure is rare while cracked solder joints on the PCB near the slot are not unheard of. A brace is cheap enough that the argument is mostly academic. What it must not do is push the card upwardwhy heavy graphics cards sag covers the difference between supporting and levering.

Power is the problem you meet once, expensively

This one is different from the others: it does not degrade gradually, it happens in a second and it can take a drive's filesystem with it.

Whether it is worth spending on depends on the supply rather than the machine. A room where lights dim when the washing machine starts, or where the breaker has tripped more than once, is a room where unclean shutdowns will keep happening. A stable supply with occasional storms is a surge-protector problem, not a battery-backup problem. Diagnosing which one you have costs very little, and it is a better first purchase than either.

What we would not bother with

  • Repasting a machine under two years old that has never been cleaned. Clean the intakes first and re-measure. The paste is almost never the cause.
  • Replacing every fan to fix noise before identifying whether the noise is aerodynamic or mechanical. See above.
  • Compressed air cans as an ongoing habit. They are a consumable solving a recurring problem, and the propellant can condense on cold components if the can is tilted — the comparison is here.
  • Sealing a case for silence. Dampening material added without airflow planning trades a noise problem for a heat problem, and heat makes fans spin faster.

Questions people actually ask

How often should a gaming PC actually be cleaned?
Twice a year suits most rooms. Carpet, pets or smokers push that to quarterly. The honest test is to look at the intake filter rather than the calendar — when the mesh is grey rather than black, it is due.
Is a hot graphics card actually a problem?
Not by itself. Modern cards are designed to run hot and will throttle rather than fail. The problem is what heat indicates — restricted intake, a dust-blocked filter, or a case pushed against a wall — because those also raise noise and shorten fan life.
Does a gaming PC need a UPS?
It depends entirely on the supply, not the PC. If the lights flicker in storms or the breaker trips when something else starts up, a battery backup prevents unclean shutdowns. On a stable supply a surge protector covers the realistic risk.
Will a support bracket damage the graphics card?
Not if it is supporting rather than lifting. A brace set to hold the card level takes load off the slot. One cranked up until the card bows upward puts stress on the PCB in the opposite direction, which is worse than the sag it was fixing.
