Vented vs Condenser vs Heat Pump Dryers

The three types differ in where the water goes and what the electricity costs. One needs a hole in a wall, one heats the room, and one is slow on purpose.

The difference is where the water goes, and what you pay to move it.

A vented dryer blows warm damp air out through a hose. A condenser cools that air, drops the water into a tank, and returns the heat to your room. A heat pump recycles the heat rather than dumping it, which makes it far cheaper to run and considerably slower.

Everything else — price, cycle time, whether it suits a flat — follows from that one distinction.

The case for vented

Cheap, simple and fast

Fewest components, lowest purchase price, and a short cycle. If you have somewhere for the hose to go, this is not a compromise — it is a reasonable choice that people dismiss too quickly.

Where it disappoints

It needs the hole. Through a wall, a window panel, or a door propped open. In a rented flat that is frequently not available, and venting into the room instead defeats the entire mechanism — you are then putting every litre of water back into the air.

Dryer vent hose

Only worth buying if the air genuinely goes outside. Venting into the room puts all the moisture straight back into the flat, which is the problem the dryer was meant to solve.

The case for condenser

No hole, same speed

It gets the water out at vented-like speed with no permanent alteration to the building. For a house with space, that is a straightforward win.

Where it disappoints

The heat all stays with you. Everything it takes out of the clothes is added to the room. In a small flat that means a warm, humid space for the length of the cycle — the same conditions that put water on the windows.

And the tank needs emptying, every cycle or two, or the machine stops.

The case for heat pump

Much cheaper to run

It reuses the heat instead of generating it fresh, which is where the saving comes from. Over the life of the machine that difference is large enough to change which is cheaper overall.

Gentler, because it is cooler

Lower drying temperature is easier on fabrics, which matters for anything you would otherwise hang up rather than risk.

Where it disappoints

Time. Often half again as long as a condenser, sometimes more. If your pattern is a load that has to be back in the wardrobe within the hour, this is the wrong machine and the running cost will not console you.

Price, and two filters — there is a secondary one people forget until performance drops.

Making whichever one you have work better

Wool dryer balls

They separate the load so air actually moves through it, which shortens cycles and reduces tangling. Not a fix for an overfilled drum — that stays slow whatever is in it.

Clean the lint filter every single cycle. It is the most neglected task in this category, it lengthens cycles and raises costs when ignored, and in vented and condenser machines it is a genuine fire risk.

Spin faster before drying. A higher spin speed in the washing machine removes water mechanically, which is far cheaper than removing it with heat.

Where the cheaper option is genuinely enough

A heated airer, which costs a fraction of any of these to buy and to run. For two loads a week with somewhere to put it, this is the honest recommendation.

Heated clothes airer

Far cheaper to buy and to run than any dryer. Under a cover it works considerably better, and it still puts moisture into the room — so ventilate, or pair it with the next item.

A dehumidifier in the room with a normal airer, which dries clothes and removes the moisture in one step, and is the standard answer in a flat with no vent.

Compact dehumidifier

Pairs with an ordinary airer to dry clothes without putting the water into the walls. Cheaper than a dryer and it earns its place the rest of the year too.

Who should pick which

Vented if you have somewhere for the hose and want the cheapest, quickest option.

Condenser if you have no vent, want speed, and have a room that can absorb the heat.

Heat pump if you dry frequently, run it overnight, and intend to keep the machine long enough for the running cost to matter. For most flats, this is the right answer.

The mistake to avoid

Buying a heat pump dryer without checking you can live with the cycle time. The running cost is genuinely much lower and it is the most common reason people are unhappy with an otherwise excellent machine.

The second mistake is venting a vented dryer into the room. Every litre it removes from the clothes goes into the flat, and it arrives on the coldest surface — which is the mechanism described in window condensation in a flat.

Is a condenser dryer a problem in a flat?
It can be. All the heat it removes from the clothes ends up in the room, along with any moisture that escapes the tank circuit. In a small flat with poor ventilation that is the same warm damp air that causes condensation on the windows.
How much slower is a heat pump dryer?
Substantially — often roughly half again as long as a condenser on a comparable load, and sometimes more. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you run it overnight or need the load back in an hour.
