The problem, as it appears
A character drifts slowly in one direction with nothing touching the stick, or a menu scrolls on its own. Early on it appears only occasionally, and a recalibration makes it go away for a while.
Then it comes back, and the interval shortens. That progression is the signature of physical wear rather than a software fault, and it is why the software fix stops working.
Why recalibration disappoints
It works by widening the dead zone — the range around centre the device treats as no input. Noise from a worn track falls inside that widened zone and stops producing movement.
Two problems. It costs precision near centre, which is where fine aiming happens. And it is chasing a moving target: as the track wears further the noise grows, the dead zone has to widen again, and eventually there is no setting that is both stable and usable.
Worth doing as a stopgap. Not worth mistaking for a fix.
What actually matters
Whether it is worth repairing at all. This is an honest question. A device near the end of its useful life, or one under warranty, points elsewhere — warranty first, always, since opening it ends that.
