Cleaning a Handheld's Sticks and Vents

These are two different faults with two different fixes, and one shared wrong tool. Grit around a stick causes a control problem; dust on a vent causes a heat problem. Neither is fixed by the thing most people reach for, which is a can of compressed air — and that can make both situations worse.

The problem, as it appears
Two complaints that arrive separately and get conflated.
The stick feels gritty — a faint crunch as it moves, or a character that drifts slightly when your thumb is off it. The device also runs hotter and louder than it used to, on games it used to handle, and the fan seems to be doing more for less.
They share a cause — the device has been in a bag, in pockets, on floors, and has drawn air the whole time — and almost nothing else.
Why canned air disappoints
Because it is the wrong tool for the specific job, in two distinct ways.
Tilted, it expels liquid propellant. That is cold enough to shock small components and it leaves residue on a board.
Aimed into a vent, it spins the internal fan far past its designed speed. That can damage the bearing outright, and a spun motor generates a voltage back into circuitry that was not expecting one. This is not a theoretical risk — it is the standard warning on any careful cleaning instruction, and it is the reason the same advice appears for desktops.

What actually matters
Brush before you blow, always
The step people skip, and it is what decides whether cleaning helps or relocates the problem.
Air aimed at a vent covered in surface dust pushes that dust inward. Brushing first removes it from the mesh so the air is clearing what is behind rather than adding to it.

Air across the vent, not into it
Direction matters more than pressure.
Short bursts across the opening lift debris out. Sustained blasts into it drive debris deeper and spin the fan. If the fan blade is reachable and can be held still with a cocktail stick, hold it — that removes the spin risk entirely.
Electric air duster
No propellant, no liquid, no running out. Hold the internal fan still if you can reach it, and work across the vent rather than into it.

Most of what restricts airflow sits on the outside mesh, which is why external cleaning resolves the majority of heat complaints. If it does not, the throttling may not be a dust problem at all — handheld throttling in a hot room covers the ambient case, which is seasonal and frequently mistaken for dirt.
For the sticks, work the mechanism
Grit under a stick sits in the gap between the shaft and the housing, and it will not come out while the stick is centred.
Rotate the stick fully through its range while brushing the seam, then again while applying short bursts of air. The movement opens the gap; a still stick keeps it closed. This is the free step and it resolves a real share of gritty sticks.
Cleaning gel is useful here for the surrounding surfaces rather than the mechanism — it lifts debris from around the base and out of the recess without pushing any of it inward.

Contact cleaner is a last resort with a real downside
Worth its own warning, because it is the step where people damage devices trying to fix them.
A stick module contains plastics and a lubricant. Generic solvents attack both — the cleaner can free the fault and then leave the stick dry, stiff or degraded, which is worse than the grit was.
If you use it: a product explicitly rated plastic-safe and non-residue, applied in a very small amount, worked through the full range of motion, and left to dry completely before powering on.

Check the label says plastic-safe and leaves no residue before it goes anywhere near a stick. The wrong solvent makes a recoverable fault permanent.

Know when it is not dirt
The judgement that saves the most wasted effort.
Drift that returns within minutes of recalibration, drift in one axis only, or a stick reading off-centre at rest after a thorough clean all point at a worn sensor rather than contamination. On a conventional stick the resistive track wears away with use, and no amount of cleaning restores material that is gone.

Opening it is the last step, not the first
External cleaning resolves most of this. Inside a handheld are ribbon cables and clips that are easy to damage and awkward to source, and a device opened to fix a mild airflow complaint can come back worse.
Exhaust the outside first. If the device is still throttling with clean vents in a cool room, the problem is thermal paste or a failing fan, and that is a repair rather than a clean.
The order to work in
- Power down and unplug. Not optional for anything involving liquid or air.
- Brush the vents from the outside before any air goes near them.
- Short bursts across the vents, fan held still if reachable.
- Rotate each stick fully while brushing the seam, then while blowing.
- Gel around the recesses, not into the mechanism.
- Recalibrate and use it for a day before concluding anything.
- Contact cleaner only if the fault persists, and only a plastic-safe one.
- Replacement sticks if drift returns quickly or affects one axis — that is wear, not dirt.
The mistake to avoid
Reaching for canned air first. It is the cheapest, most available and most recommended tool, and it is the one that can spin a fan past its rated speed and deposit propellant on a board. The damage is invisible at the time and shows up later as a noisy fan or a device that no longer cools properly, which is then blamed on age.
The second mistake is escalating to solvents before trying movement. Rotating a stick through its full range while brushing costs nothing and clears a meaningful share of gritty sticks, whereas contact cleaner introduces a chemical that can attack the plastics and strip the lubricant — turning a fault that would have cleared into one that needs a replacement module.
