Label Your Cables Once and Stop Guessing
Every unplugging session is a small gamble on a desk with a dozen identical black cables. Labels cost almost nothing and survive the next three upgrades.

Label both ends of every cable that goes behind the desk, and write what the far end connects to. It costs almost nothing, takes an hour once, and removes the small gamble that accompanies every future unplugging.

The problem, as it appears
A dozen black cables of similar thickness disappear into a bundle behind a desk. Something needs unplugging — a monitor is being replaced, a peripheral has failed — and the only way to identify the right one is to follow it by hand through the bundle, or to unplug and see what stops working.
Both are how the wrong thing gets unplugged, and the second is how a machine ends up rebooting because someone pulled a power lead.
Why doing it later disappoints
Because "later" is during a rebuild, when everything is already disconnected and the information you needed — what was plugged into what — is exactly what has been lost.
The moment to label is while everything is still connected and traceable. That is also the moment when labelling feels least necessary, which is why it does not happen.
What actually matters
What the label says. The connector type is visible; the destination is not. "Left monitor", "capture card", "printer" are useful. "HDMI" is not.
Both ends. A labelled desk end and an unlabelled machine end still means tracing at the machine.
Where the label sits. Close to the connector, where you will be looking. A label in the middle of a run is inside the bundle.
Whether it survives. Marker on masking tape behind a warm desk lasts a year or two and fades to illegibility. Printed labels, or wrap-around flags with a clear laminate, survive as long as the cable does.
The options, and who each suits
Wrap-around flag labels suit cables specifically. The tail folds back on itself into a flag that stands out from the cable and stays readable, rather than wrapping into an unreadable spiral. They come printed or blank.
A label maker suits someone labelling more than cables — storage bins, drawers, shelves. For a dozen cables alone it is more machine than the job needs, and it becomes genuinely worthwhile once the same device is doing the storage as well.

Photographs suit everyone and cost nothing. A picture of the back of the machine before anything is unplugged answers most of the questions labels would have.
Colour-coding, which is the other implementation
Colour is not a lesser version of labelling. It is a different mechanism with a different strength, and knowing which one a situation wants saves redoing the job.
Text answers "what is this". You have to get close enough to read it, which is fine at the back of a machine and useless in a bundle under a desk.
Colour answers "which one". It is readable at a glance, from a distance, in poor light, and — the part that matters — it is readable at both ends at once, which is the question you are usually asking while holding one end of something.
Assign colour to function, not to device
The rule that decides whether the scheme survives.
A colour per device breaks the moment a device is replaced, because the new one is a different colour or you are repainting the scheme. A colour per function — power, display, data, audio, network — survives every replacement, because the function outlives the hardware.
Four or five colours is the working maximum. Beyond that you are re-learning a key every time, which is the point at which text is simply better.
Mark both ends, and mark the port too
The step that halves the work later and is skipped almost universally.
A colour at one end tells you nothing about where the other end goes. Both ends, matching, is what makes the scheme answer anything.
Marking the port as well as the cable is the refinement worth adding: a dot of the same colour beside the socket means reconnecting after a move is matching colours rather than reading a manual.

Where colour is not enough
Two cases, and both are common enough to plan for.
More than about five categories. The key stops being memorable and you are decoding rather than glancing.
Cables that look identical and differ in specification. Two black USB-C cables of different capability need text, because "which one" is not the question — "what is this one" is. That is the sorting problem in retiring old cables responsibly.
The sensible arrangement for most desks is both: colour for the bundle so you can trace a run at a glance, and text on the ones whose specification matters.
The mistake to avoid
Labelling with the cable type. It is what people write because it is what they can see, and it is information you already have from looking at the connector. The label exists to tell you the thing you cannot see, which is where the other end goes.
The second mistake is labelling the permanent trunk and skipping the daily cables. It is backwards — the permanent ones get disturbed rarely and the daily ones are the ones being picked out of a bundle repeatedly.
