Retiring Old Cables Responsibly

The drawer of cables nobody can throw away is a sorting problem, not a hoarding one. What to keep, what is genuinely worthless, and where the rest goes.

This is a sorting problem, not a hoarding one. The reason nobody throws these away is that the maths genuinely favours keeping: binning a cable you later need costs a replacement, keeping it costs a bit of drawer.

The flaw is what happens next. An unsorted drawer means you cannot find the cable when you need it, so you buy one anyway — and the drawer has cost you money while appearing to save it.

The problem, as it appears

A drawer, or a box, or a bag in a cupboard, containing between thirty and two hundred cables. Some are for devices you no longer own. Several are identical. A few are genuinely good and indistinguishable from the rest by looking at them.

You cannot throw it away because there is definitely something useful in there, and you cannot use it because finding anything requires emptying it onto the floor.

Why "just sort it" disappoints

Because sorting by appearance does not work, and appearance is all you have.

USB-C is the clearest case: a charging-only cable, a USB 2 data cable, a full-speed data cable and a cable that carries video all look identical. So a sorted drawer of USB-C cables is still a drawer where you have to try three before one works.

The same applies to display cables, where the connector is the same across several generations of specification, and to Ethernet, where the category is printed on the jacket in text too small to read in a drawer.

So sorting has to be by tested capability, not by connector — and that is why the job feels disproportionate to the object.

What actually matters

Sort into four piles, not two

Keep / bin is too coarse and it is why the job stalls.

Keep and label. Current use, or expensive to replace. Keep unlabelled as spares, capped at two per type. Beyond two you are storing, not sparing. Recycle. Obsolete connectors, duplicates beyond the cap, anything for a device that is gone. Bin as unsafe. Damaged cables and unbranded chargers of unknown origin.

The fourth pile is the one people skip, and it is the one that matters.

Damaged cables are not spares

Worth separating out because a crushed or kinked cable in a spares drawer is a fault waiting to happen.

A cable with a damaged section, a loose connector or exposed shielding will work intermittently, and intermittent faults get blamed on the device rather than the cable. Every one of those hours is more expensive than the cable was.

The same applies to unbranded chargers of unknown provenance. A cable is a passive object; a charger is a mains-connected power supply, and one of unknown origin is not a spare worth keeping.

Test rather than guess, for the ones worth keeping

Because specification is invisible and it is what decides whether a cable is worth drawer space.

For USB, a tester tells you what a cable actually is — data capability, power capability, and whether all the conductors are present. That converts an indistinguishable pile into a labelled shortlist.

Label the survivors immediately

The step that prevents the whole job being needed again in two years.

A tested cable that goes back into a drawer unlabelled is an untested cable by next month, because you will not remember. Labelling at the moment of testing is the only version that works.

Where they actually go

The categories, since the specifics vary by country.

Cables and chargers are small waste electrical equipment. They are generally not accepted in kerbside recycling — they are mixed materials and they tangle in sorting machinery, which is why collections exclude them. Recycling centres accept them, and many retailers selling the equivalent product take back the old one.

Anything with a battery — power banks, charging cases — must not go in general waste or a household recycling bin. Damaged lithium cells start fires in collection vehicles and at sorting facilities. These need a battery collection point, and this is the one genuine safety rule on the page.

Working cables somebody else can use are worth offering before recycling. Repair cafés, makerspaces, schools and local giveaway groups take them, and a working cable recycled is a small waste.

Check your local authority for what it takes, because the arrangements differ and change.

Stop the drawer refilling

Almost all of the refill arrives with new devices, bundled with cables you already have several of.

Deciding at the point of unboxing — does this go in the drawer, or straight to the recycling pile — is the whole prevention, and it takes a second while the box is still open.

The order to work in

  1. Empty it all out. Sorting in situ does not work.
  2. Group by connector first, as a rough pass.
  3. Bin damaged cables and unknown chargers immediately, before anything else.
  4. Separate anything with a battery for a battery collection point.
  5. Test the ones that might be worth keeping.
  6. Label them as you test.
  7. Cap spares at two per type.
  8. Store coiled and separated, not loose.
  9. Take the rest to a recycling centre or a retailer take-back.
  10. Decide at the box next time something arrives.

The mistake to avoid

Keeping damaged cables as spares. A crushed section or a loose connector produces an intermittent fault, and intermittent faults get diagnosed as the monitor, the drive, the charger or the port — anything except the cable that was kept because it still technically worked. The hours lost to that are worth many times what the cable cost, and it is the one category in the drawer that has a negative value.

The second mistake is sorting by connector and stopping there. Four USB-C cables that look identical can be four completely different products, so a drawer sorted by shape is still a drawer where you try three before one works — which is the exact experience that made the drawer feel useless in the first place. The sort has to be by what the cable can do, and that means testing.
