The nut is hardened and the key is not. That is deliberate: the key is a soft consumable that lives loose in a boot, collects grit, corrodes, and is occasionally hammered with an impact gun. Once the engagement slips even slightly it accelerates, because each attempt damages both parts a little more.
So the useful work is all preventive and all free: find the key, confirm it fits all four wheels, photograph the pattern and any code, and put it somewhere it will still be in three years.

The problem, as it appears
A puncture, at the roadside, and the locking wheel nut key is not in the boot.
Or worse — it is there, it goes on, and it slips. The pattern is worn, the nut is corroded, and every further attempt makes it rounder. Now the wheel cannot come off by any means available at the roadside.
There is a third version that is purely administrative and just as annoying: a tyre fitter refuses the job because the key is missing, and the car goes home on a tyre that needed replacing.
Why forcing it disappoints
Because force is what destroys the engagement.
The key is intentionally softer than the nut so that it deforms rather than damaging the fastener. Under an impact gun that softness works against you — the hammering action works the key loose in the pattern before the nut breaks free, and the pattern rounds.
Corrosion compounds it. A nut that has not moved in five winters has rust filling the pattern, which means the key no longer seats fully. Partial engagement plus high torque is exactly the recipe for rounding.
That is why this is a hand-tool job. A breaker bar applies steady torque with the key fully seated; an impact gun applies thousands of small blows to a joint that needs to stay engaged.
What actually matters
Find it today, not at the roadside
The whole of the preventive work, and it costs nothing.
Locate the key. Check it actually engages on all four wheels — mismatched sets exist, particularly on used cars where a wheel has been replaced. Then photograph it, including any code stamped on it, and store that photograph somewhere that is not the car.
That code is what lets a manufacturer or specialist supply a replacement without seeing the nut, and it is only available while you still have the key. Photographing it is the single highest-value thing on this page.
Store it where it will still be
Not loose in the boot with everything else, where it migrates and eventually leaves.
With the wheel brace is the sensible answer, because those two are always needed together. In a bag, so it does not collect grit that then goes into the pattern.
Some people keep it in the house, which protects it from theft and guarantees it is absent when you have a puncture. Given that a locking nut key is not much use to a thief who does not have the car, the boot is the more practical choice.
Never use an impact gun
Worth its own line because it is the main cause of the failure and it usually happens at a tyre shop rather than at home.
If someone else is removing your wheels, it is entirely reasonable to say the locking nuts come off by hand. A rounded key discovered afterwards is your problem, not theirs.

Extraction works, and it destroys the nut
Which is fine, because that is what it is for.
An extraction socket is a reverse spiral that bites into the nut as it turns. It removes the nut and ruins it, and you replace the set afterwards.
The thing to be careful about is the wheel, not the nut. These sockets sit close to the alloy and a slip marks it. Go slowly, keep the socket square, and accept that a mobile locking-nut removal service does this every day and is often the cheaper answer once a damaged wheel is priced in.

Anti-seize on the threads, never on the seat
The detail that gets this wrong in a way that matters.
Threads: a thin film of anti-seize prevents the corrosion that makes the nut hard to remove in three years' time.
Seat face: nothing. The tapered or radiused seat holds the wheel by friction, and lubricating it means the nut can be torqued correctly and still work loose. This is a genuine safety point rather than a preference.

Torque them properly, then re-check
Locking nuts have the same torque figure as the others, and the same consequences for getting it wrong.
Overtightening is what makes the next removal difficult, and it is what turns a rounded key into an immovable wheel. Undertightening is worse.

Move them periodically
The cheapest preventive measure and the one nobody does.
A nut that has not moved in five years is the one that seizes. If you swap between summer and winter sets, that happens anyway — one more reason the seasonal swap is useful beyond the tyres themselves, which is covered in storing winter tyres in a flat.
If the wheels never come off, taking them off once every couple of years, cleaning the threads and re-torquing is an hour that prevents the roadside version of this problem entirely.
Are they worth having at all?
Honestly: for alloy wheels of any value, yes.
Wheel theft is opportunistic, and a locking nut makes your car the slower option compared with the one parked next to it. That is the same selection logic that makes a visible steering lock worthwhile.
The counterpoint is real and worth stating: they are a minor obstacle to someone determined, and the annoyance they cause the owner is recurring and certain. If your wheels are steel with plastic covers, the calculation genuinely does not favour them.
The order to work in
- Find the key today.
- Check it engages on all four wheels.
- Photograph it and any code, and store that outside the car.
- Bag it and keep it with the wheel brace.
- Tell anyone removing your wheels not to use an impact gun.
- Soak with penetrating oil the night before any planned removal.
- Anti-seize the threads, nothing on the seat.
- Torque to the figure, and re-check after a short drive.
- Move them every couple of years even if nothing needs doing.
The mistake to avoid
Discovering the key is missing at the roadside. It is the one failure on this page with no workaround available where you are standing — extraction needs tools and space, a replacement needs a code you no longer have access to, and a mobile service needs to come to you. The second mistake is letting a tyre shop use an impact gun on them. It is faster, it is what they do to every other nut, and it is the single most common cause of a rounded key — which then surfaces months later, at the roadside, with no way to connect it to the visit where it happened.
