Monitor Distance and Text Size
Text set too small pulls you forward, and the leaning is the posture problem. Fix the scale first and the distance mostly fixes itself.

Make the text bigger before moving anything. If you lean toward the screen, you are reading text that is too small at your natural distance — and the lean, not the desk, is what your back is complaining about.

The problem, as it appears
By the afternoon you are further forward than you started, your neck aches, and the chair gets blamed. Or you sit correctly, cannot quite read comfortably, and correct that by leaning — which undoes the sitting.
Nobody decides to lean. It happens because reading is involuntary and the text is too small.
Why adjusting the chair first disappoints
Because the chair is downstream of the reason you are moving.
Set a chair perfectly, then put text on the screen you cannot read comfortably from there, and within twenty minutes you will be forward of where the chair put you. The body goes where the eyes need it to be, and it does not consult you.
So the sequence that works is: make the screen readable from where you should sit, then set the seating — and that is why this belongs alongside fixing desk posture in the right order rather than after it.
What actually matters
Scale is free and it is the first move
Every operating system has display scaling, and most people leave it where it shipped.
Turn it up until text is comfortable at the distance you want to sit. Nothing is lost — on a high-resolution panel you are trading some screen area for legibility, which is the trade you wanted when you bought the resolution.
This is the whole fix for a large share of people, and it costs nothing.
High resolution without scaling makes it worse
Worth stating because it catches people who spent money to improve things.
More pixels in the same physical size means everything renders smaller by default. At native scaling, a sharper panel is a smaller panel to read — so the upgrade produces more leaning, not less.
The benefit of the resolution is sharper text at a comfortable size, and getting it requires turning scaling up.
Height decides your neck, distance decides your eyes
Two separate adjustments that get conflated.
Height: the top of the usable screen area at or slightly below eye level, so your gaze travels slightly downward. Most people sit too low relative to the screen and tilt their head back to compensate, which is the neck complaint.
Distance: roughly an arm's length as a starting point, adjusted until reading is comfortable without moving.

Bigger screens want more distance
A larger or ultrawide panel at close range means turning your head repeatedly to reach the edges, which trades an eye problem for a neck one.
Moving it back is usually the cheapest correction available, and it is frequently the thing a deep desk is actually for.
Glare pushes people forward too
A screen you are squinting at because of a reflection produces the same lean as text that is too small, and no amount of scaling fixes it.
If the desk faces a window, that is a separate problem with its own answers — reducing monitor glare in a bright room.

Laptops make it structural
A laptop fixes the screen to the keyboard, so the screen is at typing height and the keyboard is at screen height — one of them has to be wrong.
Raising the laptop and adding a separate keyboard resolves it, and it is a larger improvement than almost anything else you can add to a laptop.
The order to work in
- Turn scaling up until text is comfortable from where you want to sit. Free.
- Set the height so the top of the screen is at or slightly below eye level.
- Set the distance so you can read without moving — arm's length, adjusted.
- Deal with glare if you are still squinting.
- Then adjust the chair, which now has a fixed target to work to.
The mistake to avoid
Fixing the lean with furniture. A chair, a cushion or a back support that fights a forward lean is working against the reason you lean, and the reason wins because it operates below conscious control. Remove the reason and the furniture has a much easier job.
The second mistake is buying a higher-resolution monitor to make text clearer and leaving scaling at its default. That combination reliably produces smaller text than before, which is the exact opposite of the purchase's intent — and it is why some people conclude a good monitor made their eye strain worse.
