Continuous surface, or a hard divide? That is the actual question. An ultrawide gives you one uninterrupted area for a single large task; two screens give you two defined areas for two tasks that should not bleed into each other.
Everything else — total pixels, price per area, cable count — follows from that choice rather than deciding it.

The short version
Ultrawide. One panel, no divide, one set of cables. Excellent for a single wide task — a timeline, a spreadsheet, a document beside its source. Needs desk depth, and it is one point of failure.
Dual monitors. More total area for the money, a physical divide between tasks, and the option of turning one of them portrait. Two of everything, and a bezel exactly in the middle.

The bezel is a feature or a fault, depending on the job
This is the argument people have without noticing they are arguing about different work.
If you want one enormous window — a video timeline, a wide spreadsheet, a long document — the divide is an obstruction and an ultrawide is straightforwardly better.
If you want two things that should stay separate — a game and a chat window, code and its output, a call and your notes — the divide does that for free, permanently, without window management. That is not a compromise; it is the arrangement doing its job.
Depth is the constraint nobody plans for
The wider the screen, the further away it has to sit before you can take in both edges without turning your head.
Most desks are short of depth rather than width, so a very wide screen at typical desk distance means scanning side to side — which trades an eye problem for a neck one. Two smaller screens angled inward sit within a shallower arc.

The portrait option belongs to two screens
Turning a screen ninety degrees is genuinely transformative for reading, code, documents and long pages — and it is only available if one screen can be spared for it.
For a lot of people that single change delivers more than any amount of extra width, and it costs nothing if the screen is already owned.
Mounting is where ultrawides surprise people
An ultrawide is heavy and long, so an arm has to handle both the mass and the leverage of that mass sitting away from the pole.
Check the stated weight range rather than assuming, and check that your screen actually has standard mounting points — some do not, and an adapter plate is the difference between a workable plan and a returned arm.

One device or two, when it breaks
Rarely discussed and worth a sentence. An ultrawide is a single point of failure: if it dies or goes away for repair, the desk stops. With two screens you continue on one.
That is not a reason to choose either, but it is a real difference and it does not appear on a specification sheet.
The decision, plainly

- Games are the main use and specific titles matter → check those titles first

The mistake to avoid
Buying width to fix a cramped desk. Screen area and desk space are different resources, and a wider panel at the same distance is harder to use rather than easier — it needs more depth, which is exactly what a cramped desk lacks. The second mistake is buying two screens and using them as one. If every arrangement you want spans the bezel, you wanted an ultrawide — and the divide will irritate you every day. Deciding whether your work splits or spreads is the whole choice, and it is worth five minutes before spending anything.
