A gaming desktop and a work laptop, one desk, one good monitor, one keyboard worth using. Currently either two sets of peripherals compete for the surface, or cables get swapped twice a day.

Both are worse than they need to be, and the market's answer — a KVM switch — is the priciest option with the most ways to disappoint.

Why starting with a KVM disappoints

Because it duplicates something the monitor already does. Nearly every modern monitor has at least two inputs and a way to switch between them, so the video half of the problem is solved before you buy anything.

The KVM's video path is also where its risks live. Passing high-resolution, high-refresh video through an inexpensive switch is demanding, and the economies show up as capped refresh rates, signal drops on wake, and handshake failures — problems you did not have before spending money.

What actually matters

Whether the monitor's input switching is usable. A dedicated button or a shortcut is fine. Three levels into an on-screen menu is the case where a KVM starts to earn its price.

How the peripherals move. A USB switch moves keyboard, mouse and anything else attached, and cannot affect the display because it never touches the video path.

Where the ports are. Reaching behind a machine to plug something in is the daily annoyance that survives every other fix. A desk-front hub is the cheap solution and it applies whichever machine is active.

Software sharing suits two networked machines and costs nothing. Worth trying first — for a desktop and a laptop doing ordinary work it is frequently sufficient.

The mistake to avoid
