Reducing Echo on Calls Without Buying Panels
The room reaches the microphone as reflections off hard flat surfaces. Break those and the echo mostly goes, using things already in the house.

Move closer to the microphone before moving anything else. It does nothing about the reflections and everything about the ratio between your voice and them, which is what the other end hears.
Then break the short paths — desk, wall behind the screen, the nearest bare wall — with things you already own.

The problem, as it appears
You sound like you are in a room. Not obviously echoing, but hollow — as if the microphone is further away than it is, with a slight ring on the end of words.
Everyone recommends acoustic panels, which cost money, take up wall space and need mounting.
Why buying panels first disappoints
Because panels are the last few percent, and they are usually bought before the first ninety.
Treatment reduces how much reflected sound exists in the room. That is real, and it is slow and expensive relative to the alternative: raising how much direct sound reaches the microphone, which changes the same ratio from the other side.
Halving the distance to the microphone increases your direct voice substantially while leaving the room's contribution essentially unchanged. No panel does that, and nothing on a wall competes with it.

What actually matters
Distance, again, because it is the whole ratio
The mechanism is set out in microphone position and the proximity effect, and it applies here exactly.
Closer means you can lower the gain, and lowering the gain lowers everything that is not your voice — including the reflections you were trying to treat. It is one adjustment that improves both halves of the problem.
The short paths matter most
Not all surfaces contribute equally. What matters is the ones producing a short path from your mouth to a surface and back to the microphone:
- The desk itself. Large, hard, flat, and directly between you and the microphone.
- The wall behind the screen. Close, usually bare, and facing you.
- The nearest side wall, especially in a small room.
A folded blanket or a soft desk mat on the desk between you and the microphone does more than the same material on a distant wall, because that path is shortest and arrives loudest.
Soft, thick and irregular
This is why a furnished room sounds better than an empty one, and it is a free specification.
Curtains — closed, and better still if heavy. A rug on a hard floor. A bookcase with books at uneven depths, which scatters rather than absorbs and is genuinely useful. A coat left on the back of the door.
Thin and flat does very little. A poster or a thin fabric hanging looks like treatment and is not.
Point the microphone at something soft
Directional microphones reject what is behind them. So the useful arrangement is the microphone pointing toward you with something absorbent beyond you — and the bare wall behind the microphone rather than behind you.
Turning the desk round, or turning the microphone the other way, occasionally fixes this entirely.
The microphone type is doing some of the work
A less sensitive pattern picks up less of the room for the same voice level, which is the whole argument in dynamic versus condenser — and it is why the studio-grade condenser people buy to sound better often makes an untreated room sound worse.

Software suppression has a real cost
Noise suppression is good at steady sound — a fan, a hum. Reverberation is your own voice arriving late, which is much harder to separate.
Pushed hard enough to remove it, suppression starts taking parts of your voice with it, and the result is the processed, underwater quality everyone recognises on calls. Use it lightly, after the physical fixes, rather than instead of them.
A door is a large hard surface too
Worth a mention because it is free: a door onto a hard hallway both reflects and lets sound in and out. Closing it helps, and blocking the gap underneath helps a little more.

The order to work in
- Move the microphone closer and lower the gain. Free, largest effect.
- Soften the desk path — anything absorbent between you and the mic.
- Close the curtains, add a rug, open a bookcase to the room.
- Check what is behind the microphone, not just behind you.
- Close the door.
- Light noise suppression, if still needed.
- Panels, only if the room is genuinely still the limiting factor.
The mistake to avoid
Treating the room before fixing the distance. Every material you add reduces reflected sound a little; moving closer raises direct sound a lot. Doing them in the wrong order means spending money to achieve less than a free adjustment would have — and then concluding that treatment does not work.
The second mistake is leaning on software suppression to hide an untreated room. It is the fastest fix and the one that degrades your actual voice, so the audible result is a caller who sounds slightly robotic rather than one who sounds slightly distant. Getting the physical arrangement right lets you use it gently, which is where it does its best work — and it pairs with setting levels properly, in gain staging without clipping.
