Headlights dim so gradually you never notice, and mirrors leave a gap no adjustment closes. Two cheap fixes, and one of them is free.

Both of these get worse slowly enough that you never notice a day when they were fine.

Headlights dim across a bulb's life and your eyes adapt in step with it. Mirrors leave a gap that adjustment reduces and never closes. Neither produces a moment where something obviously breaks, which is why both tend to be dealt with after an incident rather than before one.

The problem, as it appears

You drive an unfamiliar road at night and it feels darker than it used to. Nothing has failed; the lights come on, the beam is where it was.

And changing lane on a motorway involves a moment of doubt that a mirror was supposed to remove.

Why the obvious answer disappoints

"The bulbs are working" is the wrong test. A halogen filament thins as it burns and the light falls away across its life. Because it happens over months, your eyes track it, and the comparison you would need — this bulb against a new one — is exactly the comparison you never make.

And "adjust your mirrors properly" only gets you so far. Setting the door mirrors wide, so they begin roughly where the interior mirror's view ends, is genuinely the largest improvement available and it costs nothing. It also leaves a residual gap on most cars, particularly with a passenger's headrest or a thick rear pillar in the way.

So: do the free adjustment first, then decide whether you still have a gap.

What actually matters

1. Replace bulbs on age, not on failure

The useful habit is to treat headlight bulbs as consumables with a service life rather than as parts that either work or do not.

Two rules make the difference:

Replace in pairs. Both have run the same hours, so the second failure is not far behind — and more immediately, a new bulb next to an aged one gives visibly uneven output.

Do not touch the glass. Oil from skin creates a hot spot on the envelope that shortens life significantly. Hold the base; if you do touch it, clean with alcohol before fitting.

2. What uprated halogens do and do not do

A road-legal uprated halogen runs at the same wattage and produces a whiter, more tightly focused beam. That is a real improvement in how well you see, and it is not more light.

Two things worth knowing before spending:

  • Uprated bulbs generally have a shorter life, because the gains come from running the filament harder.
  • LED bulbs in a halogen housing are, in many jurisdictions, not road legal. The reflector is shaped around a filament, and an LED emitter puts light where that reflector was never designed to send it. The usual result is glare for oncoming drivers and a shorter useful beam for you.

3. The mirror gap, after the free fix

Set the door mirrors outward until they pick up roughly where the interior mirror stops. Most people have them aimed too far inward, duplicating a view they already have.

If a gap remains — and on many cars it does — a small convex mirror covers it. Placement is what decides whether it helps: the outer top or outer bottom corner, over the least useful part of the existing view. In the middle it covers the part of the mirror you actually use.

Outer corner only — placed centrally it blocks the part of the mirror you rely on. Clean and dry the glass before sticking, and fit in warm conditions or the adhesive will not take.

4. The lens in front of the bulb

A hazed headlight lens scatters light regardless of what is behind it, which is why a brighter bulb in a clouded housing mostly produces glare for oncoming drivers rather than range for you.

The haze is oxidised polycarbonate — the factory UV coating has broken down and the plastic beneath it is degrading. Polishing removes the damaged layer and, on its own, leaves bare plastic that will haze again faster than the original did. The sealant step decides whether this lasts a season or several years, and it is the step cheap kits either omit or supply as a token wipe.

Judge the kit on its UV sealant rather than its abrasives — polishing without resealing leaves bare polycarbonate, which hazes back faster than the original. Mask the paint around the lens first; the compounds do not distinguish between plastic and clearcoat.

The mistake to avoid

Treating a convex mirror as a substitute for looking. It compresses distance, so a car in it is closer and moving faster than it appears. It is an aid to a shoulder check, not a replacement for one, and using it as a replacement is how a helpful item becomes the cause of the incident.

The second mistake is fitting brighter bulbs to compensate for a dirty or hazed lens. A clouded headlight scatters light regardless of what is behind it, and a new bulb in a hazed housing mostly produces more glare for everyone else. Clear the lens first — that is a different job, and it is cheaper than the bulbs.

Questions people actually ask

How often should halogen bulbs be replaced?
Before they fail, which is the part people miss. A halogen filament dims steadily across its life and the loss is gradual enough that your eyes adapt to it, so the light can be well down long before anything stops working.
Should I replace both headlight bulbs at once?
Yes, always. They have done the same hours, so the second is close behind the first, and a fresh bulb beside an old one gives visibly uneven output that draws attention to the dim side.
Are brighter halogen bulbs legal?
Uprated halogens sold as road legal are made to the same wattage and produce a whiter, better focused beam rather than more of it. Anything promising a large jump in output at the same wattage is worth reading very carefully.
Can I fit LED bulbs in halogen headlights?
In many places that is not road legal in a housing designed for halogen, because the reflector is shaped around a filament and an LED puts light where the housing was never meant to send it. The result is glare for oncoming traffic and often less usable range for you.
Why do I need to touch the glass carefully?
Skin oil on a halogen envelope creates a hot spot that shortens the bulb's life considerably. Handle it by the base, and if you do touch the glass, clean it with alcohol before fitting.
Do blind spot mirrors actually help?
They show the area a correctly set main mirror still misses, which is a real gap rather than an imagined one. They do not replace looking over your shoulder, and treating them as a substitute is how they cause a problem instead of solving one.
