Sun Glare a Visor Does Not Block

The gap between the visor and the mirror is where low winter sun sits. What closes it safely, and what puts a solid object in your field of view.

The visor is sized for summer sun. The glare that blinds you is winter sun, and it sits below the visor.

Low sun occupies a band around the rear-view mirror — beneath where the visor reaches, above the dashboard. That gap is the whole problem, and it is worst in the exact conditions where you most need to see: winter mornings, wet roads, low angles.

Clean the inside of the windscreen before buying anything. It is free, and on most cars it is the single largest improvement available.

The problem, as it appears

Driving into low sun with the visor down and the glare still coming in under it. Lowering the visor further blocks the road; leaving it up gives you the full sun.

Why the obvious assumption disappoints

The visor cannot be extended downward safely. Its lower edge is roughly where obstruction of the road begins. That is a design limit rather than an oversight.

And the screen itself is producing most of the glare. Interior glass collects a film of plasticiser released by a warm dashboard. That film scatters light — so identical sun produces a bright point through clean glass and an opaque white wall through hazed glass.

What actually matters

1. The inside of the windscreen, which is free

This is the fix people skip because it does not involve buying anything. A hazed interior screen is the difference between glare you can drive through and glare you cannot.

Do it properly and repeat it seasonally — the film returns as the dashboard warms through spring.

2. Polarised sunglasses, which are the honest first purchase

They move with your head, obstruct nothing, add no object to the car, and come off in a tunnel. For almost everyone this is where the money should go before any fitted accessory.

Polarising cuts glare reflected off flat surfaces — wet road, bonnet, other cars. It does not reduce direct sun.

3. A visor extension, with the trade-off stated

An extension closes the gap. It also puts a solid panel into the upper field of view permanently, which is a real cost rather than a free gain.

If you fit one, favour a tinted translucent panel over an opaque one, make sure it is securely retained, and check it does not obstruct your view of overhead signals.

4. Polarised clip-ons, and their specific limitation

They handle reflected glare well. They can also make some LCD instrument clusters and infotainment screens difficult or impossible to read at certain angles, which is worth discovering in a car park rather than at speed.

5. The reflections coming off your own dashboard

A pale, shiny dashboard reflects into the screen and produces a permanent haze at eye level. That is a separate problem from direct sun and it has a separate answer: a dark matt surface.

Where the free option is genuinely enough

Cleaning the inside of the glass. Repeated, because it comes back.

Wiper blades that clear rather than smear. Sun through a smeared arc is far worse than sun through a clean one — choosing windshield wiper blades.

Removing clutter from the dashboard, all of which reflects.

Slowing down. Low sun on a wet road is one of the genuinely hazardous combinations, and no accessory changes that.

The mistake to avoid

Solving glare by putting something solid in your field of view. An extension that blocks the sun also blocks whatever is behind the sun, and the point of seeing is not comfort.

The second mistake is buying anything before cleaning the inside of the screen. On a car that has not had that done in a year, it is the largest improvement available and it costs nothing.

Questions people actually ask

Why does the visor not cover the sun?
Visors are sized for high summer sun. Low winter sun sits below the visor's reach and above the dashboard, in a band around the rear-view mirror, and that gap is exactly where the glare that matters ends up.
Are visor extensions safe?
They add a solid object into the upper field of view, which is a genuine trade-off rather than a free improvement. Anything that obstructs vision or is not securely fixed is a hazard, and rules on what may obstruct the windscreen vary by country.
What does the inside of the glass have to do with it?
Almost everything. The interior film of plasticiser haze scatters light, so the same sun through a dirty screen produces a wall of glare and through a clean one produces a bright spot. Cleaning the inside is free and is usually the largest single improvement.
