Sleeping in a Car Properly

Flat matters less than warm, and warm must never come from the engine. What actually decides whether a night in a car is bearable.

The problem, as it appears

A long drive, an early start, or accommodation that did not work out. The car is there, the seats recline, and it looks like a solved problem.

Then it is three in the morning, you are cold from underneath, the windows are streaming, and the angle you are lying at has become the only thing you can think about.

Why "the seats recline" disappoints

Because comfort in a car overnight is decided by heat loss and ventilation, and reclining addresses neither.

You lose heat downward into surfaces that conduct it away far better than air does. Meanwhile a sealed cabin fills with the moisture you exhale, which condenses on cold glass and then on everything else.

Both problems are worse in a car than in a tent, and both are solved with things that have nothing to do with how far the seat goes back.

What actually matters

The engine stays off. This one is absolute.

A running engine produces carbon monoxide. A stationary car can admit it to the cabin, and the risk rises sharply if snow, undergrowth, a kerb or a wall is near the exhaust.

It is odourless. Its first effect is drowsiness, which is indistinguishable from falling asleep, and that is precisely why it kills people doing exactly this.

There is no version of "just for ten minutes to warm up" that this page endorses. Insulate, add layers, and if you are genuinely too cold to be safe, drive somewhere warm rather than idling.

Insulation underneath beats every other purchase

This is the fix people skip because the obvious answer is a warmer blanket.

A sleeping bag's rating assumes its insulation is lofted. Under your body weight it compresses flat and provides very little, so heat goes straight into the seat or the load floor — which conducts it away efficiently.

Anything that stays thick under compression works: a foam pad, a folded blanket, a purpose-made pad. It matters more than the bag on top of it, and it costs less.

Ventilation is not optional

You exhale a substantial amount of water overnight. In a sealed metal box that condenses on the coldest surfaces — glass first, then bedding.

A window cracked at each end of the car gives cross-flow, which is meaningfully better than one window open. Insect mesh over the gap is the usual refinement in warm weather.

Damp is uncomfortable rather than dangerous, but it compounds the cold, which is why the two problems travel together.

Flat matters less than which way it slopes

Perfectly level is nice and rarely available. What genuinely matters is direction: sleeping with your head slightly higher is tolerable, and head-down is not.

So park to control the slope rather than to eliminate it, and level front-to-back before worrying about side-to-side.

Privacy and light

Covered windows help twice — they stop early light waking you and they remove the sense of being visible, which does more for sleep than people expect.

A windscreen shade is the one most people already own, and side windows can be handled with anything opaque wedged into the frame.

Where you park is a real decision

Legality varies by country, region and individual site, and signage means what it says. Beyond the rules, prefer somewhere level, lit enough to feel fine and quiet enough to sleep — those three rarely coincide, and choosing which to give up is the actual decision.

The mistake to avoid

Running the engine for warmth. It is the intuitive solution, it works for the first few minutes, and it is the only thing on this page that can kill you. Carbon monoxide gives no warning that is distinguishable from being sleepy in a warm car.

The second mistake is spending on the blanket rather than the pad. Warmth above you is the visible half and heat is leaving downward through compressed insulation into a surface that conducts it away — so the money goes to the wrong side of the problem, and the night is cold anyway.
