Roadside kits tend to be assembled around dramatic failures and stocked for the wrong ones. The things that actually strand people are mundane and repetitive, and the kit that reflects that is smaller and cheaper than the one sold in a bag.

This is ordered by likelihood, which is the only sensible way to prioritise a finite trunk.

1. The battery, by a wide margin

Most roadside failures are starting failures, and most starting failures are the battery rather than anything downstream of it. On an older car this is worse for structural reasons: the charging system is less sophisticated, the parasitic draw is often higher than the designer intended after decades of added accessories, and the car probably sits for longer between drives.

2. Tires, mostly slowly

The second most common reason for stopping is pressure loss, and it is usually gradual — a slow puncture found in a car park rather than a blowout at speed.

The battery-clamp connection is the detail that matters here, and it is why cheap socket-powered inflators disappoint: the 88P draws up to 20A, and many older cars have a lighter circuit fused at 10A or 15A, so the fuse goes before the tire is up. On any pre-1990s car, check the circuit rating before assuming a socket-powered unit will work at all.

3. Being visible and being seen

Unglamorous and genuinely important, particularly for a car that may stop somewhere unlit:

  • A warning triangle, which is a legal requirement in much of Europe and a good idea everywhere.
  • A high-visibility vest, kept in the cabin rather than the trunk. A vest in the trunk requires you to stand in the road to get it, which is precisely backwards.
  • A real flashlight, not a phone. A phone used as a flashlight is a phone you cannot use to call for help, and the battery is finite.

4. Fluids and the ability to see

  • Water, useful for both the cooling system and the driver.
  • Oil, if the car uses any — many older engines do, and the level matters more on a long drive.
  • Screen wash, because a windshield that cannot be cleared is a genuine stopping condition rather than an inconvenience.

5. A fuse assortment, for the fix you can actually make

A blown fuse can kill the fuel pump, the ignition or the lights outright, and it is one of the very few roadside electrical faults an owner can fix in minutes — provided the right fuse is in the car and you never fit a higher rating than the one that blew. 6. Getting out, if the doors do not open

The rarest item on this list, and the one worth the least argument about whether to carry it: a combined window breaker and seatbelt cutter, kept within reach of the driver's seat rather than in the trunk. What is mostly theatre

Being direct about this saves both money and trunk space:

  • Pre-packed "emergency kits" sold as a bundle. The contents are usually chosen for the photograph — a large bag of small, thin tools that will not turn a real fastener, plus a foil blanket. Assemble your own.
  • Fix-a-flat sealants, with a caveat. They can get you home, but they make a subsequent proper repair harder and some tire fitters will refuse a sealant-filled tire. Carry one if you accept that trade; do not carry it believing it is a repair.
  • A full socket set, unless you know what you would use it for at the roadside. Carry the sizes your car actually needs and leave the case at home.

Who should carry what

For a carburetted or occasionally used classic, battery support is first. That can be a maintainer at home, a jump starter on the road, or both. The important distinction is prevention versus rescue: the maintainer stops the problem developing; the booster gives you one more chance after it has.

For a car with old wiring, choose equipment that does not depend on the accessory socket until you have tested that socket under load. That is why the compressor recommendation leans toward battery clamps. Ugly is acceptable; predictable is better.

For a car driven at night or on rural roads, visibility equipment moves up the list. A vest and triangle do not repair anything, but they change the risk around the repair. The best packed tool in the world is not helpful if other traffic does not understand what is happening soon enough.

For a car that goes on longer trips, add documentation: insurance, roadside-assistance number, fluid types, tire pressures and any start procedure quirks. Where the kit lives matters

Questions people actually ask

Jump starter or jumper cables?
A jump starter, if you mostly drive alone or park where nobody will pull alongside. Cables are lighter, cheaper and never go flat, but they require a second car and a willing stranger, which is exactly what you do not have at the times this matters. Many people carry both; the cables cost little and weigh little.
How often does a jump starter need charging?
Lithium jump starters self-discharge slowly but they do self-discharge, and one left in a trunk for a year will likely be flat when needed. Treat it as a device requiring a recharge every few months. A jump starter you never check is a heavy object, not a safety measure.
Is a tire inflator worth carrying if the car has a spare?
Often yes, because the most common tire problem is a slow loss of pressure rather than a blowout, and an inflator addresses that without a wheel change at the roadside. It also lets you check and correct the spare, which on an older car is frequently flat.
Why do socket-powered inflators fail on older cars?
Because a compressor draws far more current than a cigarette-lighter circuit was designed to supply. How much of this applies to a modern daily driver?
The battery and tire items apply to any car. The rest scales with age — a modern car with a properly rated accessory circuit can use a cheaper socket-powered inflator, and is less likely to need the equipment redundancy an older car justifies.
