Split Keyboards
The shoulder problem they solve is real, and a smaller keyboard solves most of it for less. What splitting adds, and what it costs you for months.

Do the free things first, then the small keyboard, then the split. The shoulder problem is real — but most of it is caused by the number pad pushing your mouse out of reach, and that is the cheapest thing on this page to fix.
Splitting adds what a smaller board cannot: hands at shoulder width and wrists that are not angled sideways to reach the keys. It costs a fortnight of typing badly.

The problem, as it appears
Your shoulders ache by the afternoon, or there is a dull line along the outer edge of the forearm to the little finger.
Everything on the desk looks fine. The chair is adjusted, the screen is at a sensible height, and the keyboard is the one that came with the computer.
Why the keyboard gets blamed last
Because the fault is where your hands are, not what they are pressing.
A conventional keyboard puts both hands close together in front of your chest. Your shoulders are wider than that, so the upper arms rotate inward and stay there. Held postures are tiring in a way that movement is not, which is why this arrives in the afternoon rather than immediately.
Then the keys themselves are laid out in a straight block, so each hand has to angle outward at the wrist to line up with them. That sideways bend is the one felt along the outside of the forearm.
Neither is a strength problem or a technique problem. Both are geometry, and geometry is what a split board changes.
What actually matters
The number pad is doing more harm than the layout
Start here, because it is the largest effect for the least disruption.
A full-size keyboard carries a number pad on the right. That block sits between your right hand and the mouse, so the mouse lives several inches further out than it needs to — and your right arm spends the entire day slightly extended and abducted to reach it.
Remove the pad and the mouse comes back toward your shoulder. That single change resolves a meaningful share of right-shoulder complaints, and it needs no retraining at all, because the letters are where they always were.

Width, then angle, then rotation
Splitting buys three things and it is worth knowing which one you need.
- Width. Each half moves out to your own shoulder width, which unwinds the inward rotation of the upper arms.
- Angle. Each half rotates so your wrists stay straight rather than deviating outward to meet the keys.
- Tenting. The inner edges rise so your palms face slightly inward rather than flat down. This one surprises people by mattering most, because lying flat holds the forearms in a rotated position all day.
A board that splits but cannot tent addresses two of the three. If your complaint is forearm rather than shoulder, tenting is the adjustment to check is present before buying.

The front feet are working against you
Small, universal, and worth stating plainly: the flip-out feet raise the back of the keyboard, which extends your wrists upward.
They exist because a raised keyboard is easier to see, which mattered when typists worked from paper and looked down. For a keyboard you touch-type on, they are a comfort cost with no remaining benefit.
Flat is better. Slightly negative — front higher than back — suits a keyboard sitting at or below elbow height, which is where a keyboard should be anyway.
The adaptation is real, and it is worth budgeting for
Nobody enjoys the first fortnight. Speed drops noticeably, and the errors cluster on keys you have been reaching with the wrong hand for years without knowing it — B, Y and N are the usual confessions.
That cost is the reason this is a treatment rather than an upgrade. Someone with an actual symptom trades two uncomfortable weeks for relief; someone without one trades two uncomfortable weeks for nothing.
It is also why taking on a column-aligned layout and thumb keys and the split simultaneously makes for a harder introduction than necessary. Each is defensible on its own.
The mouse is half the problem
The hand that hurts is often the one holding the mouse, and no keyboard change addresses it directly beyond moving the mouse closer.
If the complaint is on the mouse side, the rotation of the forearm is doing the work — palm-down is a held twist, and a vertical or trackball shape removes it.

Wrist rests come last, and only sometimes
A rest is not a place to lay your wrists while typing. Used that way it plants the hand and makes you reach with the fingers, which is worse than no rest.
Its actual role is supporting the heel of the hand during pauses once the forearms are roughly level — a detail rather than a fix.

Desk depth quietly decides whether any of this fits
A split board occupies more width and usually wants more depth in front of it, and a shallow desk means the halves get pushed toward the edge.

The order to work in
- Fix the chair and desk height so forearms sit roughly level. Free.
- Drop the number pad, or move the mouse inside it.
- Put the keyboard flat, feet down.
- Address the mouse hand if the complaint is on that side.
- Then split, and expect a fortnight.
- Adjust tenting, which is where much of the remaining benefit is.
The mistake to avoid
Buying one without a symptom. This is a treatment, the adaptation costs real working time, and a person who is comfortable now gets the cost with none of the return. The interest is understandable — these are appealing objects — but "I might as well" is how a two-week productivity dip gets bought for no reason.
The second mistake is skipping the ordering. Height, chair and mouse position sit upstream of the keyboard, so a split board installed above unresolved problems inherits them and gets blamed when the ache continues.
