There Is a Puddle Under the Car

The colour and the position identify the fluid, and the first useful step costs nothing. What each one means, which two mean stop driving, and when dye is worth it.

A puddle is a diagnosis waiting to be read, and most of the reading is free. The colour, where it sits relative to the car, whether it spreads or beads, and whether it appears after driving or overnight will identify the fluid in the large majority of cases — and the fluid decides everything that follows.

The mistake is going straight to a parts shop. The second mistake is going straight to a tool.

Do this before buying anything

Degrease the underside area, drive it as normal, then park over a clean sheet of cardboard overnight. That is the whole first step, and it does more than any tool sold for the job.

It works because a dirty engine bay hides the source and a wet driveway hides the colour. A clean surface gives you two facts at once: where the drip lands relative to the wheels, and what colour it is before oxidation and road grime change it.

The two rows in bold are not a matter of judgement. A brake-fluid leak means the system that stops the car is losing its working fluid, and a fuel leak is a fire risk that a torch or a dye kit makes worse rather than better. Both are jobs for a workshop, and the diagnosis is already done — the puddle told you.

The tools that earn their place

Clean cardboard, and something to see with

The unglamorous half. Cardboard is free; the light is not, and it is the thing most people are missing when they say they cannot find the leak. Under a car in a garage at dusk you are looking for a wet edge on a dark, oily surface — that is a contrast problem, not a knowledge problem.

A mirror is the other half, because most leaks are on top of something and only show underneath.

That criterion is harder to shop for than it sounds. The Ullman A-2T is the specific mirror we would point at for reach and head size — 6 in to 18-5/8 in on a stainless handle — but its maker publishes no hold-angle claim either, so treat sag as something to check in your hand rather than something a specification will settle for you.

A degreaser, so the second look means something

Without this the first look is the only look you get, because everything is already wet with old residue and you cannot tell new from old.

Cover the alternator and any exposed electrical connectors before spraying. Getting the bay clean is the point; getting it wet in the wrong places creates a second fault to chase.

A drip mat, if the answer is going to take a while

Some leaks are slow enough that the sensible plan is to monitor rather than to chase, particularly on an older car where a weeping gasket may outlast your ownership. A mat makes that decision liveable instead of ruining a garage floor.

When a UV dye kit is actually the answer

Everything above finds a leak that drips. A dye kit is for the one that does not: an intermittent seep, a leak that only appears under load, or a system losing fluid with nothing visible on the ground at all — most commonly air-conditioning refrigerant, which leaves no puddle by design.

The dye goes into the system, circulates, and glows at the exit point under a UV lamp. That is genuine information you cannot get any other way, and it is why the kits exist.

Check the dye is rated for the system you are putting it in — oil, coolant, ATF, power steering and A/C dyes are not interchangeable. The glasses matter more than the torch's claimed output.

Coolant is the exception worth naming

If the fluid is coolant and the level is dropping with no puddle, dye is not the first tool. A pressure tester holds the system at working pressure while the engine is cold and stationary, which finds the leak without waiting for the car to be driven and without adding anything to the coolant.

Also the tool that tells you the leak is internal, which is the answer nobody wants — no external leak under pressure points at the head gasket rather than a hose.

What this page will not do

It will not tell you which gasket. Identifying the fluid and the rough position is the part you can do in a driveway with cardboard and a light, and it is the part that decides whether the next step is a twenty-minute job, a workshop booking, or not driving the car. Tracing a known fluid to a specific seal is a different job, usually from underneath, and often with the dye kit above.

The order matters more than the equipment. Diagnosing before buying parts is the whole argument of diagnostic tools that stop you guessing at parts.

Questions people actually ask

Is a small drip always worth fixing?
It depends entirely on which fluid. A little engine oil weeping from a cam-cover gasket is a slow, cheap, well-understood problem. The same volume of brake fluid is a reason not to drive the car. The quantity tells you almost nothing on its own — the identity of the fluid is the whole question, which is why the free steps below come before any tool.
What is the clear liquid under my car in summer?
Almost always air-conditioning condensate, and it is normal. The evaporator drain sheds water whenever the system runs, so a puddle of plain water under the passenger side on a hot day is the car working correctly. If it is slippery, sweet-smelling or coloured, it is not condensate.
Can I find a leak without a lift?
Usually yes for the identification, which is the part that decides what happens next. Clean cardboard under a parked car overnight gives you position and colour without touching anything, and a mirror plus a light reaches most of what a lift would show. Where a lift genuinely helps is tracing a leak upward once you know what it is.
Does UV dye work for every leak?
No. It works well for oil, coolant, automatic transmission fluid, power steering and air-conditioning refrigerant, because those systems are closed and the dye circulates. It is not the tool for a brake-fluid leak, which is a stop-driving fault rather than something to trace, and it will not help with a fuel leak — which needs a workshop, not a torch.
