The problem, as it appears

The coolant level drops. There is nothing on the driveway, no puddle, no obvious wet patch — and occasionally a faint sweet smell after a long run.

You look while it is running and see nothing, because everything back there is hot and anything escaping has already evaporated.

Why looking harder disappoints

Because the conditions that produce the leak are the same conditions that hide it.

A cooling system is pressurised deliberately, which raises the boiling point of the coolant and lets it run hotter without boiling. Many small leaks only open up once that pressure and temperature are present — a hose joint that seals cold and weeps warm, a seam that opens as metal expands.

By the time those conditions exist, the escaping coolant hits hot metal and leaves as vapour. There is nothing to find because there is nothing left to find, and you are searching a hot engine bay by torchlight for evidence that evaporates on arrival.

The tester removes the temperature from the equation and keeps the pressure. Cold engine, normal working pressure, held for as long as you like — and now a leak that took an hour of driving to reveal itself becomes a visible bead in ten minutes.

What actually matters

The cap pressure is a limit, not a target

Use the figure stamped on the pressure cap and stop there.

That number is what the system was designed to hold. Going above it does not find leaks faster; it finds them by creating them, and turning a weeping hose into a split one is an expensive way to complete a diagnosis.

Give it time, and look in the unglamorous places

Pressure does not always produce an immediate drip. Pump to the rated figure, then leave it and watch the gauge — a slow fall over several minutes is a real result even if nothing has appeared yet.

The places worth checking before the obvious ones: the underside of hoses rather than the top, where gravity takes the drip; the heater core outlet in the footwell, which shows up as damp carpet and misted glass rather than anything under the car; the water pump weep hole, which is doing its job when it drips; and the expansion tank seam, which cracks along the moulding line.

Test the cap while the kit is out

A cap that releases early lowers the boiling point of the whole system.

The symptom is overheating with no leak anywhere — usually on a long climb or in traffic on a hot day — and it gets misdiagnosed as a thermostat, a pump, or something much worse. Most kits carry an adapter for it and the test takes a minute.

Holding pressure and losing coolant is the informative case

This is where the tool earns its place, because a negative result is not a dead end.

If the system holds steady and the level still falls, the coolant is going somewhere that is not outside — and the usual route is into a cylinder, where it leaves as steam through the exhaust. That points at a head gasket or a cracked head.

The reverse test asks whether combustion gas is getting into the coolant, which is the same failure seen from the other side and does not require dismantling anything.

Refilling is where people create the next problem

A cooling system holds air in places that do not clear themselves, and trapped air causes overheating that looks exactly like the fault you just fixed.

And put back the coolant the car specifies. Types are not universally compatible, and topping up with whatever is on the shelf is a slow problem created while solving a fast one.

Hot coolant deserves respect

Worth one plain sentence: never open a hot system, and treat the released pressure as the hazard rather than the temperature alone.

It is a rarely-used tool that you need urgently

Honest about ownership: this sits in the cupboard for a year and then becomes the only thing that will answer the question.

Many parts shops lend them, and the adapters are what make a kit fit your car. For a single modern car, borrowing is reasonable. For a household with several, or an older car where this will recur, owning it is the easier call — the same reasoning applied across the whole set in diagnostic tools that stop you guessing.

The order to work in

  1. Cold engine. Not warm, cold.
  2. Read the cap and note its pressure rating.
  3. Fit the tester and pump to that figure, no further.
  4. Watch the gauge for several minutes before concluding anything.
  5. Look underneath hoses, at the heater core, the pump weep hole, the tank seams.
  6. Test the cap with the adapter.
  7. If it holds and coolant still disappears, move to a combustion leak test.
  8. Refill through a funnel and purge the air properly.

The mistake to avoid

Over-pressurising to force the leak out. The cap rating is the system's design limit, and past it you are no longer testing — you are loading old hoses and a tired radiator beyond what they were built for. A hose that would have weeped for another year can split on the spot, and the diagnosis becomes a recovery.

The second mistake is treating a system that holds pressure as a clean result. It is not "no fault found"; it is a specific and useful finding that rules out every external leak at once and points the investigation inward. Reading it as a failed test is how people go back to topping up and waiting, when the next check was already obvious — much like the ordered sequence in first inspection after long storage, where each result decides what gets looked at next.

What does the tester actually do?
It replaces the pressure cap with a hand pump and gauge, so you can hold the system at its normal operating pressure while the engine is cold and stationary. That turns an intermittent hot leak into a steady one you can stand there and look for, which is the entire value — the leak is no longer waiting for conditions you cannot reproduce on a driveway.
Why can I not just look for the leak while it runs?
Because a small cooling leak usually only appears at temperature and pressure, and by then the area is hot, wet, and often steaming — so the fluid evaporates before it reaches anywhere you could see it drip. Everything is also too hot to touch. Pressurising it cold gives you the same pressure with none of those problems.
What pressure should I use?
