Too Hot, and Unable to Open a Window

On a plane, a coach or a hotel room with sealed glass, you cannot change the temperature. What works is evaporation and moving air, and one of them is free.

You cannot change the temperature, so stop trying. You can change how fast your skin evaporates.

That is the entire mechanism available in a sealed cabin, a coach, or a hotel room with windows that do not open. Every fix on this page is either moving air across skin or putting water on it, and the two together work considerably better than either alone.

A note on this guide: this rests on how evaporative cooling behaves rather than on kit tested here. How well any of it works depends heavily on humidity, and in humid heat the honest answer is that it mostly does not. See how we test.

The problem, as it appears

A cabin that has been warm since boarding, a vent that is either shut or aimed at somebody else, and several hours to go. Or a hotel room where the glass is sealed and the air conditioning is a switch with two settings, neither of which is the one you want.

Why the obvious answer disappoints

The overhead vent is the obvious answer and it is often not available. On many aircraft they have been removed entirely, and on the rest the one above you may be aimed elsewhere or already fully open.

And "drink more water" is good advice about dehydration rather than about being hot. It matters — cabin air is extremely dry — but it does not cool you. Those are different problems that get given the same answer.

The thing that actually works is unglamorous: keep air moving over damp skin.

What actually matters

1. Why moving air cools without being cold

Your skin loses heat by evaporating moisture. In still air the layer immediately against you becomes saturated and evaporation slows almost to a stop.

Moving that layer away restarts it. This is why a fan feels dramatically cooler while doing nothing whatsoever to the temperature of the room — it is not cooling the air, it is removing the saturated boundary layer.

A small clip-on fan is therefore worth more than its size suggests, and it works on a tray table, a seat back or a bedside table equally.

Travel fan

Clip or fold rather than freestanding — the useful ones attach to a tray table or a seat pocket. Lithium batteries travel in the cabin and never in the hold, which is an airline rule rather than a preference.

2. Water on the skin, in the right two places

Wrists and the back of the neck. Blood runs close to the surface at both, so evaporation there removes heat out of proportion to the area involved.

This is free, and it is the first thing to do before reaching for anything you bought.

3. Something that holds water long enough to matter

A cooling towel is a weave that holds a lot of water and presents a large surface area to the air. That is the whole trick — there is no coolant and nothing chemical happening.

It works well in dry air and moving air, and it stops working when the water is gone, which is sooner than people expect. Re-wetting is part of using one.

The mechanism is evaporation, so it needs dry moving air to do much. Snap or wring it to restart the cooling; when it stops working it has simply run out of water.

4. The towel that is doing a different job

A travel towel is easy to confuse with the item above and it is not the same thing. Microfibre absorbs several times its weight and gives the water back quickly, which makes it a towel you can pack and still use tomorrow.

It earns its place where there is no towel — a hostel, a night train, a rented flat that provided one thin one — and it doubles as the damp cloth in the section above.

Absorbency and drying time are the two properties that matter; a large one still packs small. Dry it before it goes back in the bag, since microfibre holds smell readily once it is shut in damp.

The mistake to avoid

Expecting any of this to work in humid heat. Evaporative cooling depends on the air having capacity to take more moisture. When it does not, the towel stays wet, the fan moves warm damp air around, and you get very little for the space they took up.

In that situation the answers are shade, stillness and fluid, and no accessory substitutes for them. It is worth knowing before rather than after, because a cooling towel in a tropical August is the clearest example on this site of a product that works exactly as described and still does not solve your problem.

Questions people actually ask

Why does moving air help if the air is already warm?
Because cooling comes from evaporation off your skin, and still air quickly becomes saturated right at the surface. Moving that layer away lets evaporation continue, which is why a fan feels cooler without changing the room temperature at all.
Do cooling towels actually work?
Yes, and the mechanism is ordinary evaporation rather than anything special in the fabric. The weave holds water and presents a large surface, so it evaporates steadily. Any damp cloth does the same thing less tidily and for less time.
How long does a cooling towel stay cool?
Until the water in it has gone, which in dry moving air is a modest number of minutes and in humid still air is longer but far less effective. Re-wetting is part of using one, not a sign it has failed.
Are they any use in humid heat?
Much less, and this is the honest limit. Evaporative cooling depends on the air being able to accept more moisture. In high humidity there is little capacity left, so both fan and towel lose most of their effect.
Can I use a battery fan on a plane?
Small personal fans are generally acceptable in the cabin, but the battery rules are the ones that matter — lithium cells travel in the cabin, never in the hold. Check your airline, since this is a policy question rather than a physics one.
Is a travel towel just a small towel?
It is a different fabric doing a different job. Microfibre absorbs several times its weight and dries in a fraction of the time cotton needs, which is what makes it packable. It is less pleasant to use and much more practical to carry.
What is the free version of all this?
Wet your wrists and the back of your neck and sit where air moves. Blood runs close to the surface at both points, and evaporation there does a disproportionate amount of the work.
