The problem, as it appears

An SSD upgrade leaves the old drive spare. It works, it holds a few hundred gigabytes, and it goes in a drawer because reading it requires opening a machine.

Six months later there are three of them, none can be read without disassembly, and buying an external drive looks easier than dealing with any of it.

Why leaving them disappoints

Beyond the waste, drives in drawers become unreadable in a practical sense. Nobody remembers what is on them, they get less compatible with time, and eventually they are discarded with data still on them — which is its own problem if they were ever used for anything personal.

The other cost is buying storage you already own. An old SSD in an enclosure performs perfectly well as a portable drive, and the enclosure costs a fraction of an equivalent new one.

What actually matters

Which interface the drive uses. This is the one thing that goes wrong. M.2 is a slot shape, not a protocol — drives in that slot may use NVMe or the older SATA protocol, and enclosures are built for one or the other. Some support both; most do not, and it is not obvious from the drive.

Whether it needs external power. 2.5-inch drives and M.2 drives run from the USB port. 3.5-inch desktop mechanical drives do not, which is why docks for those have a power supply.

Enclosure or dock. An enclosure is for one drive that stays in it. A dock is for swapping drives in and out, which suits an archive of several.

Heat, on fast NVMe drives. A quick drive in a sealed plastic enclosure under sustained transfer will throttle. Metal enclosures act as heatsinks, which is worth the small extra cost for anything fast.

The options, and who each suits

An M.2 enclosure suits an NVMe drive freed up by an upgrade, and produces genuinely fast portable storage. Metal rather than plastic if the drive is quick.

A SATA-to-USB adapter suits occasional recovery work — reading a drive from an old machine, pulling files off before disposal. It is the cheapest option and leaves the drive's electronics exposed, which is fine for a bench and poor for a bag.

A docking station suits several drives. Slot one in, read it, swap it out — which turns a drawer of old drives into a functional archive without an enclosure for each.

An external optical drive belongs in the same drawer-clearing exercise for a different reason. If the old machine had a DVD or Blu-ray drive, that drive is not worth rehousing — external units cost little and modern machines have nowhere to fit an internal one. What matters is whether there are still discs worth reading, because the answer is usually a one-off archiving job rather than a permanent addition to the desk.

Buy it for a one-off archiving session, not as a fixture. Check it is bus-powered if the machine has no spare mains socket.

Disposal suits a drive that is genuinely too small or too old to be useful. Wipe it properly first — a drive that once held an operating system has held a great deal more than its owner remembers.

The mistake to avoid

Buying an enclosure before checking which protocol the drive uses. The M.2 slot accepts both NVMe and SATA-protocol drives, they look identical, and an enclosure for one will not read the other. The drive's model number and a manufacturer page settle it in a minute.

The second mistake is treating a repurposed drive as backup. An old drive is old, its remaining life is unknown, and a copy on a drive that already served years in a desktop is not a durable one. Useful for transporting and for overflow; not the place for the only copy of anything — backing up more than game saves covers what that needs instead.

Questions people actually ask

Will any NVMe drive fit any enclosure?
No. Enclosures are built for a specific interface, and older M.2 drives using the SATA protocol are not interchangeable with NVMe ones despite the identical-looking slot. Check which your drive is before ordering.
Do old drives need reformatting first?
Usually yes if they held an operating system, since the partition layout will be untidy. Copy off anything wanted first — reformatting is not recoverable and old drives frequently hold more than people remember.
Is a bare SATA adapter as good as an enclosure?
For occasional recovery work, better — it is cheaper and takes seconds. For a drive in regular use, an enclosure protects the electronics and the connector, which a bare adapter leaves exposed.
Do 3.5-inch drives work over USB?
Only with external power. A desktop mechanical drive draws more than a USB port supplies, which is why docks for them have a power brick and 2.5-inch adapters do not.
