Washing Salt Off the Underside

The part of the car that rusts is the part nobody washes. What actually reaches it, when in winter it is worth doing, and the mistake that makes it worse.

The panels people wash are not the panels that rot. Salt collects on the underside, in wheel arches and behind arch liners, and it keeps those surfaces damp and conducting long after the paintwork has dried.

Rinsing it off is unglamorous, takes ten minutes, and does more for how long the car lasts than any wax. The timing matters more than the equipment: after the salting stops, on a day above freezing.

The problem, as it appears

A car that looks well kept from the outside and has bubbling along a sill, an arch lip or the bottom of a door. By the time it is visible from the outside it has been happening from the inside for a while.

Meanwhile the winter wash routine — where there is one — is aimed entirely at the parts that are visible.

Why the obvious approach disappoints

The obvious approach is to wash the car normally and more often. It disappoints for two reasons.

Reach. A hose or a lance aimed from the side wets the outer edge of the underside and the visible part of the arch. The middle of the floorpan, the inside faces of the sills and the space behind the arch liners get nothing, and those are where the salt sits.

Timing. Washing in the middle of a salting period removes salt that is replaced on the next drive. The wash that counts is the one after the roads stop being treated — and the one before the car is parked up for a while, because salt left on a car that then sits is the worst combination available.

There is also a way to make it worse, which is the reason this page has a caution in it: water that goes in and cannot get out. Sills, doors and box sections drain through small holes. If those are blocked and you wash enthusiastically, you have put water inside a cavity that stays wet.

The version for people with no outside tap is a cordless washer with its own tank. It is not a substitute for mains pressure — the published ceiling is a fraction of a domestic unit — but the constraint it removes is availability rather than force, and a rinse that happens beats a better one that does not.

What actually matters

1. Checking the drains before you start

Sills and door bottoms have drain holes. Look, and clear them if they are packed.

This takes two minutes and it is the difference between rinsing a cavity and filling one. The same check applies to the drains that keep water out of the cabin — blocked sunroof and door drains.

2. Reaching the middle

This is the whole equipment question. An underbody wand is a bar with upward-facing jets on a wheeled or sliding head that you push under the car — it exists because nothing else reaches the centre of the floorpan without a lift.

3. Behind the arch liners

Where the salt and grit actually pack, in the gap between the plastic liner and the metal arch.

Get a hose or a wand up behind the liner from below, and expect a surprising amount of debris to come out the first time. This one job is worth more to the car's structure than the rest of the wash.

4. Pressure, and keeping it away from things that spin

A pressure washer is effective and it is the one tool here that can cause damage.

Keep it moving, keep the distance up, and stay off wheel bearings, CV boots, suspension bushes and any edge of underseal that is already lifting. Water driven behind a lifting seal is trapped water, and trapped water under a coating rusts unobserved.

Distance and movement matter more than the pressure figure. Close-range blasting near bearings and seals is how a cleaning job becomes a repair.

The options, and who each suits

A hose and a wand, at home

The best value and the one most people can actually do. No high pressure, adequate volume, and a wand gets it where it needs to go.

A pressure washer, carefully

Faster and better at the packed material behind arch liners. Worth it if you already own one; not worth buying purely for this given the caution it needs.

An automatic wash with an underbody pass

Brief, fixed and better than nothing. In the middle of a bad winter with nowhere to wash at home, it is a reasonable answer rather than a compromise you should feel bad about — washing a car with no driveway covers the rest of that situation.

Nothing, if the car is garaged and never sees salt

Worth saying. This is a treatment for a specific cause, and a car that does not meet the cause does not need it.

The mistake to avoid

Washing it during the salting season and calling it done. The salt comes back on the next drive. The wash that changes anything is the one after the roads are clear, and the one before the car is left standing.

The second mistake is treating surface rust you find as a cosmetic job. Salt-driven corrosion works from behind, so a bubble in the paint is the late symptom rather than the injury — removing and preventing surface rust covers what is worth treating and what needs looking at properly.

Questions people actually ask

Does washing the underside actually reduce rust?
It removes the thing driving it. Road salt keeps a surface damp and conducts, so corrosion continues in conditions where plain water would have dried and stopped. Rinsing it away removes both the moisture retention and the electrolyte.
When in winter should I do it?
After the salting stops rather than during it, and on a day above freezing. Washing before the next gritting run only replaces what you removed, and doing it in freezing conditions leaves water in places you would rather not have ice.
Is a normal hose enough?
For loose salt, largely yes, and reach is the limitation rather than pressure — a hose aimed from the side wets the outer half of the underside and does little for the middle. That is exactly the gap an underbody wand exists to fill.
Can I use a pressure washer underneath?
With care and distance. Close-range high pressure drives water past seals, into bearings and behind underseal — where trapped water does more harm than the salt did. Keep it moving and keep it back.
What about the drain holes?
Check they are clear before you start. Sills and doors have drains, and washing water into a box section that cannot empty is the one way to make this job actively harmful.
Does an automatic car wash underbody blast do the job?
It is better than nothing and it is brief and fixed-position. If it is the only option available in midwinter it is worth using; it does not reach the same places as a wand you can aim and hold.
What about the wheel arch liners?
That is where salt and grit collect most, packed into the gap between liner and arch. Rinsing behind the liners does more for a car's life than washing the paint does, and nobody does it.
