Where Suction Hooks Work and Where They Fall Off

They hold on glass and fail on almost everything else. The surface test that takes ten seconds, and why they let go in the middle of the night.

Suction works on glass and fails on nearly everything else. It needs a non-porous, genuinely smooth, continuous surface — and a bathroom wall with grout lines, a textured tile, or a matt finish is none of those.

There is a ten-second test that settles it: press your palm flat on the spot. If you can feel grain, texture or a grout line through your skin, the cup cannot seal there.

The problem, as it appears

A suction hook goes up in a bathroom. It holds for a day, sometimes a week. Then it comes off in the night, usually with something attached, usually landing in a bath.

It goes back up. It falls again. Eventually the conclusion is that suction hooks are rubbish — which is half right, and the wrong half.

Why the obvious fix disappoints

The obvious fix is a bigger cup or a better brand. It disappoints because the failure is nearly always the surface or the temperature, and neither is a property of the hook.

The surface. A suction cup holds because air is excluded and atmospheric pressure does the rest. That requires continuous contact across the whole rim. A grout line running under the cup is a channel straight to the outside air, and a textured tile is thousands of them.

The temperature. This is the one nobody connects. A bathroom is warm and humid in the evening and cold at three in the morning. The air trapped inside the cup contracts as it cools, the seal shifts, and the vacuum is lost — which is why the failure happens overnight and seems to have no cause.

So the same hook that has held a bathrobe on a shower screen for two years falls off a tiled wall in a fortnight, and both are behaving exactly as the physics says.

What actually matters

1. The palm test, before buying anything

Press your palm flat and still against the spot. Feel for grain, for a grout line, for the faint roughness of a matt glaze.

Smooth and continuous: suction is viable. Anything else: it is not, and a stronger hook is a more expensive version of the same failure.

2. Wetting the cup

The step in the instructions that everybody skips. A trace of water fills the microscopic gaps in the rim and lets the seal wet out properly.

Clean both the cup and the surface first — a smear of soap residue is a leak path, and bathrooms are full of soap residue.

3. Where the cup sits relative to grout

If the hook must go on tile, place it entirely within a single tile. A cup that spans a grout line is a cup with a built-in air channel.

That constraint alone rules out small tiles completely.

4. What you are prepared to have fall

Treat the printed weight as a ceiling reached only on perfect glass at a stable temperature. Then hang nothing breakable, nothing that will hurt if it lands, and nothing you would mind finding in the bath.

The options, and who each suits

Suction, on glass

A shower screen, a mirror, a window, a glossy acrylic panel. This is the case suction is genuinely good at, and on it these are excellent — instant, reversible, and they leave nothing at all.

Adhesive, on sound flat surfaces

More tolerant of a matt finish than suction is, and completely intolerant of texture and damp. It also commits: one placement, and removal has its own technique.

Tension, which needs no surface at all

The overlooked answer in a shower. A tension pole braces floor to ceiling or wall to wall and holds far more than either sticky option, on any surface, including the textured tile that defeats both.

An adhesive shelf, if the tile is large and flat

For a shower where a pole will not fit, a bonded shelf on a single large tile is more predictable than suction — provided the tile is genuinely flat and the bond area avoids grout.

The mistake to avoid

Loading it immediately after fitting. Suction seals settle, and so do adhesives. A hook that holds when you press it may not hold an hour later, and the way people find out is by hanging something on it straight away.

The second mistake is re-fitting a fallen cup to the same spot without asking why it fell. If the surface failed the palm test, it will fail again — and the third or fourth attempt is usually the one where something breaks. Move it to glass, or change method.

What surfaces do suction cups actually work on?
Glass, glazed ceramic tile, gloss-finished acrylic and polished stone — non-porous, genuinely smooth, and continuous. Anything with a texture, a grain, a grout line under the cup or a matt finish will not hold a vacuum, and no amount of pressing changes that.
Why do they fall off overnight?
Temperature. A bathroom that is warm and humid in the evening and cold by 3am has air inside the cup that contracts and expands, and the seal loses its grip as the surface cools. That is why the failure is nocturnal and seems random.
Is there a test before I buy?
Press your palm flat on the intended spot. If you can feel any grain, grout line or texture through your skin, a suction cup will not seal there. It is a ten-second test and it is more reliable than the packaging.

Meaningfully, on the right surface. A lever that draws the cup down after placement produces a stronger initial vacuum than pressing with a thumb, which is why they are the type worth buying if you have decided on suction at all.
What should I use instead in a shower?
A tension pole caddy, which needs no surface adhesion at all, or an adhesive shelf on tile if the grout lines allow a flat bond. Both are more predictable than suction in the one room where suction is most often sold.
