Wireless Charging on a Desk

It removes a cable and adds heat, slowness and a placement problem. Where that trade is worth it on a desk, and where a short cable simply wins.

It removes a cable you pick up and puts down a cable that never moves. The count is unchanged. What changes is that nothing gets dragged, tangled or knocked off the desk, and on a desk where the phone is picked up twenty times a day that is a genuine improvement.

What you pay for it: slower charging, more heat, and an alignment problem you cannot see. Whether that trade is worth it depends almost entirely on whether you buy a stand or a pad.

The problem, as it appears

A phone on a desk, a cable to it, and the cable is never where the phone is. It gets dragged, it falls behind the desk, and the connector wears out from being plugged and unplugged a dozen times a day.

So a pad seems obvious. And then the phone is at 40% at five o'clock despite sitting on the pad all afternoon, warm to the touch, having been placed a centimetre off centre.

Why the wattage figure disappoints

Because it is a peak under ideal conditions and you will not see it sustained.

Induction across two coils separated by two plastic cases is inefficient by design, and the energy that does not make it across becomes heat. The charger then throttles to keep temperature under control, so the sustained rate settles well below the advertised number.

Two things make it worse and both are invisible.

Alignment. The coils have to line up. On a flat pad you cannot see whether they do, so a phone put down slightly off charges slowly, runs hot, or does not charge — and you discover it hours later.

The case. Thickness reduces coupling. Anything metallic in it is worse: a plate for a magnetic car mount, or a card left in a card-holder case, either blocks charging outright or heats up on its own.

What actually matters

A stand, not a pad, for a desk

A stand holds the phone at a readable angle, which means you see notifications without picking it up — and alignment is fixed by the cradle rather than by where your hand happened to drop it.

A flat pad is better in exactly one situation: when you want the phone face down and ignored.

Heat is the reason to care about how it sits all day

Not alarming, and worth arranging around.

Lithium cells age faster when warm and when held at a high state of charge, and a phone sitting at 100% on a pad that runs warm all afternoon is both at once. That is the same mechanism described in handheld battery health over years, and it applies here.

The practical version: a charger that stops or idles when the phone is full is better than one that holds it warm, and a phone that is genuinely topping up through the day is in a better state than one parked at full.

Check what your case is doing

Free, and it explains a lot of poor results.

Take the case off and compare. If charging is noticeably better without it, the case is the problem — usually thickness, sometimes a metal plate, very often a card left in a holder.

The card case is worth calling out specifically because it does not merely block charging. The card can heat, and some cards are damaged by it.

Keep a cable as well

Not a redundancy, a different tool.

Wireless charging is for topping up while you work. A cable is for when you are leaving in twenty minutes and need real charge, and for anything the pad does not support.

Treating the pad as a replacement is what produces a phone at 40% when you need to go out.

Consolidate rather than adding

The honest way to make a desk tidier, and a pad on its own does not achieve it.

If the desk already has a phone cable, a watch charger, an earbud case and a power bank, adding a pad makes five things. A multi-device station makes one.

Where a stand is not the answer at all

Two cases.

The phone is a second screen. If you use it propped up for messages, a stand that also charges is ideal — but check the angle is usable, because charging stands are often angled for glanceability rather than for reading.

The desk has no room. Then the question is not charging, it is where the phone goes at all, which is where to put a phone and a drink — and a clamp-on stand that recovers desk surface may matter more than whether it charges.

The rental and tidiness angle

Worth noting since it is one of the stated reasons people buy these.

The pad still needs a cable to a socket. Placing it means routing that one cable neatly and never touching it again — which is the version of cable tidying that actually sticks, and it pairs with cable tidying in a rental with no drilling.

The order to work in

  1. Decide stand or pad — stand for a desk unless the phone should be face down.
  2. Test with the case off to see what the case costs you.
  3. Remove any cards from the case. They block and they heat.
  4. Route the pad's cable once, properly, since it never moves again.
  5. Keep a fast cable on the desk as well.
  6. Consolidate if there are already three chargers on the desk.
  7. Check it idles when full rather than holding the phone warm.

The mistake to avoid

Buying it to reduce clutter. It replaces a cable to the phone with a cable to the pad, so nothing is removed — and if the phone mostly sits in one place, the cable was not the problem in the first place. The genuine benefit is that the remaining cable stops being handled, which matters on a desk where the phone moves constantly and matters not at all on one where it does not.

The second mistake is treating it as the only charger. Sustained wireless rates are well below a cable's, and the failure shows up as a phone that is somehow never quite full — most visibly on the afternoon you need to leave at short notice. A pad for the working day and a cable for when it matters is the arrangement that works.

Questions people actually ask

Is wireless charging bad for the battery?
Not inherently, and the heat it produces is a genuine factor. Induction is less efficient than a cable, and the lost energy becomes heat in the phone — which is one of the two things that ages a lithium cell. A pad that runs warm all day under a phone at full charge is the version worth avoiding.
Why is it so much slower than a cable?
