Are Steering Wheel Locks Still Worth Using?
Most can be defeated by someone who has decided to — the honest case for one is that it works on the decision, before anyone touches the car.

The standard objection to a steering wheel lock is that a thief with an angle grinder gets through it in under a minute. That is true and it is aimed at the wrong question.

The problem, as it appears
A car worth stealing, parked outside overnight, and a nagging sense that the factory security is doing less than it used to.
The lock in the boot looks like something from a different era, and the question is whether it belongs there or on the wheel.
What it is actually doing
A lock like this does not work by being unbeatable. It works before anybody touches the car.
Someone walking a street choosing a target is making a fast comparison, and a bright yellow bar across a wheel is visible from outside. The car next to yours does not have one. That comparison is where the device does its work — on the decision, not on the attempt.
Which means the honest framing is: it will not stop someone who has specifically decided to take your car, and it makes it meaningfully less likely they decide on your car in the first place. Those are different claims, and only the second one is being made here.
Worth knowing too that the common defeat is not attacking the lock at all — it is cutting the steering wheel rim, which is softer and faster. A lock that boasts about its own hardened body is answering a question the thief was not asking.

Where it has become more relevant, not less
Keyless entry changed this. A relay attack works by extending the signal from a key sitting inside your house to the car outside, and the car then unlocks and starts entirely normally. There is nothing wrong with the car's electronics, so no electronic countermeasure applies.
A steel bar across the wheel is indifferent to how the car was started. That is why a piece of 1980s-looking hardware is genuinely more useful on a modern keyless car than it was on the cars it was designed for — one of the few cases where old technology got more relevant.
What actually matters
Fit before function. Airbag-equipped wheels, unusual rim shapes and thick rims all affect whether a given lock actually fits. Check yours rather than assuming universal means universal.
Use it every time or the deterrence is not there. A lock used on nights you remember is protecting those nights only, and the whole mechanism is that a passing thief sees it.
Layer it. Deterrence, an immobiliser, a tracker and where you park all address different stages. A visible lock is the cheapest layer and the weakest one in isolation.
The honest limitations
It will not stop a determined, equipped thief. It will not help if the car is towed or lifted. It adds a step every time you park, and a fair number of people stop using theirs within a month — which is the real-world failure mode far more often than any attack is.
For a car that sits for long periods rather than parking on a street, disconnecting it electrically does more for the same effort, and the wider storage routine covers what else matters while a car is not being driven.
The mistake to avoid
Fitting one and treating the question as closed. A lock addresses selection and delay — whether a thief picks your car over the one beside it, and how long they persist once inside. It does nothing about the method actually used against most modern cars, which reaches the key rather than the vehicle, and which a lock in the cabin cannot see.

The second mistake is buying one you will stop using. The failure mode here is overwhelmingly abandonment rather than defeat — a lock that takes thirty seconds to fit each time ends up in the boot by the second month, and a lock in the boot deters nobody.
