Classic Car Winter Storage: What Goes Wrong

What actually kills batteries, tires, brakes and paint over a four-month lay-up — in order of how likely each is, and what genuinely prevents it.

Most of the damage a stored car suffers is not dramatic. It is a flat battery in March, a patch of surface rust on a brake disc, a smell in the cabin that takes a season to shift, and a set of perished wiper blades. None of it is interesting, and all of it is avoidable.

This guide covers what actually goes wrong over a winter lay-up, in rough order of how likely it is to happen, and what genuinely addresses each one. It is deliberately not a shopping list — several of the fixes cost nothing.

The battery is the problem you will definitely have

Every other item on this page is conditional. This one is not.

A lead-acid battery self-discharges even when nothing is connected to it, and a car built after about 1975 is never truly disconnected: clocks, alarms, ECUs and radio memories all draw a small current continuously. The combination flattens a healthy battery over a few months, and a lead-acid battery that sits deeply discharged sulfates — which permanently reduces the capacity it can ever hold again.

So the battery does not merely go flat. It gets worse at its job, permanently, every time you let it happen.

There are three honest options:

  1. Disconnect the negative terminal. Free. Stops the parasitic draw but not self-discharge, so it delays the problem rather than solving it. It also loses radio codes and alarm settings, which on some cars is a genuine nuisance. A battery disconnect switch is the convenient version of this, and it doubles as a theft deterrent.
  2. Remove the battery entirely and keep it somewhere above freezing. Effective, and a good idea if the car lives somewhere unheated. It is also the option most likely to strand you when you want to move the car in February.
  3. Leave it connected to a maintainer. A modern maintainer is not a trickle charger: it monitors voltage and delivers current only when the battery needs it, which is what makes leaving it connected for months safe.

The third is what most people should do, provided there is a socket within reach.

Moisture is the problem you will probably have

A cold car in a cold space collects condensation. In a sealed classic with old door seals and a carpet that has never been out, that moisture has nowhere to go, and four months is long enough for it to become a smell, then mildew, then a rusty floor pan.

What helps, in order of how much difference it makes:

  • Get the car dry before it goes away. A car put away wet stays wet. This is free and it matters more than anything you can buy.
  • Ventilate the space, not just the car. An unheated garage with no airflow will hold humidity against everything in it, including tools.
  • Leave the windows very slightly open if the space is secure and rodent-free — which is a real condition, not a formality.
  • Put a desiccant in the cabin. Renewable desiccant units are recharged in a socket rather than thrown away, which for annual storage makes considerably more sense than disposable tubs.

Be realistic about scale. A small desiccant unit manages the air inside a cabin. It will not dehumidify a garage, and any product suggesting otherwise is selling to the wrong expectation.

Unheated is not the danger. Changing temperature is.

This is the question people actually arrive with — is an unheated garage bad for it? — and the answer is usually no, for a reason worth understanding rather than taking on trust.

Condensation does not form because metal is cold. It forms when a surface is colder than the dew point of the air touching it. A car is a large lump of metal with real thermal mass, so it lags the air around it by hours. That lag is the whole mechanism:

  • A consistently cold, ventilated garage. The car and the air cool together and stay together. Few crossings, little condensation. This is the common case and it is fine.
  • A garage heated at weekends. Warm, moisture-carrying air arrives faster than the car can warm up. The panels are still at Tuesday's temperature, the air is now well above their dew point, and water forms on the car — including inside it, where it will not dry. This is worse than leaving the heat off entirely.
  • A mild, damp spell after a hard frost. The same thing, without anyone touching a thermostat. Nothing can be done about the weather, which is exactly why ventilation and a dry car beforehand are the parts that matter.

So the instinct to take the chill off a garage is the one to resist. Heating a space intermittently does not protect a stored car; it manufactures the condition that harms it. Either heat it continuously — which almost nobody is going to pay to do over a whole winter for one car — or leave it alone and ventilate.

Two practical consequences. A concrete floor is a moisture source as well as a cold surface, so a sheet under the car is worth more than it looks. And if you want to know what your own garage actually does rather than what it feels like, measure it — a cheap hygrometer over a fortnight settles the question for your building, which no general advice can.

Tires, brakes and fluids

Tires lose pressure over months, and a tire sitting under load at low pressure deforms. Inflating to the top of the manufacturer's recommended range before lay-up costs nothing and covers most of it. Set it with a gauge you trust rather than the one built into a compressor — the reasoning is in digital tire gauges vs gas station pumps.

Over more than one lay-up, the question stops being pressure and becomes age. Tires on a car that barely accumulates mileage will time out long before they wear out, for reasons that have nothing to do with the tread — what actually retires them is worth knowing before the first cracks show up.

Brakes are the sleeper problem. Discs surface-rust within days in a damp space, which is cosmetic and scrubs off. What is not cosmetic is a handbrake left engaged for months, where the shoes can bond to the drum. Fuel matters more for cars stored with a partly empty tank, where the exposed steel above the fuel line can corrode, and for anything with ethanol-blended fuel sitting in a carburetor. A full tank reduces the air space; a stabilizer helps if the car will sit longer than a season.

What we would not bother with

Being honest about what does not earn its place is as useful as the recommendations:

  • Starting the car weekly. Actively harmful unless you drive it properly hot. See the FAQ.
  • Jacking the car up for a normal winter. Rarely necessary on modern radials, and it introduces its own risks if the stands are on an uneven floor.
  • Fogging the engine for a three-month lay-up. This is a technique for storage measured in years.
  • A cheap non-breathable cover. Worse than nothing on a damp car.

A short version

Questions people actually ask

Should I start the car every couple of weeks over winter?
Usually not. A short idle does not get the oil or exhaust hot enough to drive off the water that combustion produces, so it adds moisture to the crankcase and exhaust without burning it back off. Either drive the car long enough to reach full operating temperature throughout, or leave it alone and manage the battery separately.
Does a car need to be on jack stands to avoid flat spots?
For a winter of three or four months on modern radial tires, usually no. Inflating to the upper end of the recommended pressure and moving the car occasionally is generally enough. Flat-spotting becomes a real concern with much longer storage, older bias-ply tires, or very cold unheated spaces.
Is an unheated garage bad for a stored classic?
Usually not, and it is generally better than one heated only at weekends. Condensation forms when a surface is colder than the dew point of the air touching it, not simply because metal is cold. A car has enough thermal mass to lag the air by hours, so warm damp air arriving suddenly — from a heater, or from a mild spell after a frost — meets panels still at the old temperature and water forms on and inside the car. A consistently cold, ventilated space produces far fewer of those crossings. Ventilation and putting the car away dry matter more than temperature.
Should I heat the garage to protect the car?
Only if you are prepared to heat it continuously all winter, which for one car almost nobody is. Intermittent heating is actively worse than none: each time the air warms faster than the car does, the panels sit below the dew point and condensation forms. Leaving it cold and ventilated is the cheaper and safer choice.
Is a cover always a good idea?
Only if it breathes and the car is dry and clean when it goes on. A non-breathable cover over a damp car traps moisture against the paint, which is worse than no cover. Outdoors, a cover also moves grit against the paint every time it flaps.
Should the handbrake be left on or off?
Off, with the wheels chocked instead. Shoes left clamped against a drum for months in a damp space can bond to it, and freeing them ranges from irritating to damaging. Chocks cost very little and remove the problem entirely, which makes this one of the few genuinely free wins in the whole routine.
How full should the fuel tank be?
Full, or close to it, for anything stored over a winter. A part-empty tank leaves bare steel above the fuel exposed to condensing moisture, and less air space means less moisture to condense in the first place. Add a stabilizer if the car will sit longer than a single season or runs ethanol-blended fuel through a carburetor.
Does any of this change if the car is stored outdoors?
Substantially. Outdoors the moisture problem dominates everything else, covers become a liability in wind, and a maintainer usually stops being an option because there is no socket. In that situation removing the battery and accepting that the car will need more recommissioning in spring is the honest plan.
