Backlight Bleed and IPS Glow

One is a manufacturing defect worth returning and the other is how the panel works. Telling them apart decides whether you have a faulty monitor or a normal one.

Move your head. If the bright area shifts or fades as you change position, it is IPS glow and it is how the panel works. If it stays exactly where it is, it is backlight bleed and it is an assembly defect.

That test takes ten seconds and it decides whether you are returning a monitor or getting used to one.

The problem, as it appears

A new monitor, a dark scene or a black desktop, and the corners are not black. There is a pale wash across one corner, or a bright streak along an edge.

The internet supplies two contradictory answers immediately: that this is a defect and you should return it, and that this is completely normal and everyone has it. Both are true, of different things.

Why "is this normal?" is the wrong question

Because there are two separate phenomena with the same description, and they have opposite answers.

IPS glow is a consequence of how in-plane switching panels work. Light passes through the liquid crystal layer and, viewed off-axis, more of it reaches your eye than the panel intended. Every IPS panel does this. It cannot be manufactured away and it is not a fault.

Backlight bleed is light escaping around the edge of the panel where it is not sealed cleanly against the frame. That is an assembly tolerance, it varies unit to unit, and a bad example is a legitimate reason to send one back.

So "is this normal" cannot be answered until you know which one you are looking at — and the two require completely different responses.

What actually matters

The head-movement test separates them

Sit centrally in a dark room with a black image on screen. Note what you can see.

Now move: left, right, up, down, closer, further.

  • Changes, fades, or migrates to a different corner → glow. It is angle-dependent because it is caused by your viewing angle.
  • Stays exactly where it is, unchanged → bleed. It is a fixed light leak and your position is irrelevant.

Most monitors show some of both, and the test tells you which is dominant.

Judge it in the conditions you actually use

A black screen in a completely dark room is the worst case, deliberately. It is the correct test condition for identifying the problem and the wrong one for deciding about it.

The question that matters is whether you can see it while doing what you normally do, at your normal room lighting. A great deal of bleed that looks alarming in a dark room is invisible during ordinary use, and returning a monitor over something you can only provoke in a blackout is a poor trade.

Do not press on the bezel

This circulates widely as a fix and it deserves a direct warning. The advice is to apply pressure around the affected area to reseat the panel.

You are pressing on a liquid crystal panel to address a cosmetic issue. The realistic outcomes are no change, temporary change, or a permanent pressure mark — and the last one is a genuine defect replacing a cosmetic one.

Bias lighting changes what you notice

Neither phenomenon can be removed, but both are most visible against a dark surround, because your eye is judging the screen against the wall behind it.

Raising the light level behind the monitor compresses that contrast, and both bleed and glow become much less obvious. It is a perceptual fix rather than a panel fix, and for glow in particular it is the only thing that helps at all.

Panel technology is a real trade

If black uniformity genuinely matters to you — dark films, dark games, photo work — that is a reason to weigh panel type at purchase rather than to fight the one you have. IPS trades black-level performance for viewing angles and colour, and other technologies make that trade differently.

That belongs in the buying decision alongside the other trade-offs in refresh rate versus resolution.

The mistake to avoid

Returning a monitor repeatedly for glow. Every replacement will have it, because it is the technology rather than the unit, and the process costs everyone time while arriving at the same screen. Establish which one you have first — the head-movement test is free and conclusive.

The second mistake is judging within the return window and then deciding later. Manufacturers commonly treat mild bleed as within specification, so warranty is a weaker route than a retailer return. If it is genuinely bad enough to bother you in normal use, decide inside the return period rather than hoping it becomes acceptable.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between bleed and glow?
Bleed is light escaping where the panel is not sealed properly against its frame — it appears as bright patches or streaks, usually at edges and corners, and it stays put when you move your head. Glow is a property of IPS panels: light passing through the liquid crystal layer at an angle, visible as a wash across a corner that changes as you move. One is assembly, the other is physics.
How do I test which I have?
Move your head. Sit centrally on a black image in a dark room, note what you see, then move sideways and up and down. Anything that shifts, fades or moves to a different corner is glow. Anything that stays exactly where it is, regardless of viewing angle, is bleed.
Is some bleed normal?
A small amount at the very edges is common on edge-lit LCDs and is generally considered within tolerance by manufacturers. What is not normal is a bright patch, a defined streak, or something visible during ordinary use rather than only on a black screen in a dark room.
Can either be fixed?
Not really, and it is worth being blunt. Glow is inherent to the panel technology and cannot be removed. Bleed is a physical assembly issue inside the monitor, and the widely repeated advice about pressing on the bezel is a bad idea — you are applying pressure to a panel to fix a cosmetic problem, with a real chance of making a permanent one.
Does bias lighting help?
With how much you notice it, yes, and that is not nothing. Both are most visible against a dark surround, so raising the light level behind the monitor reduces the contrast between the screen and the wall and makes both far less obvious. It changes perception rather than the panel.
Should I return a monitor for this?
For clear bleed visible in normal use, yes, and within the return window rather than through warranty — most manufacturers treat mild bleed as within specification, so a retailer return is usually the more reliable route. For glow, no; you will receive another one that does the same thing.
