After a long session with one game, a faint outline of the interface is visible on a plain background — a menu, a bright sky, a loading screen.

The internet says OLED burns in. The obvious conclusion is that the panel is already damaged after a few weeks.

Why that conclusion disappoints

Because two different things share one name, and only one of them is permanent.

Image retention is temporary. It is a transient after-effect that fades with varied content over minutes or hours, and it is what almost every alarmed forum post is actually describing.

Burn-in is permanent, and it is not a leftover image at all — it is uneven ageing. OLED pixels dim gradually over their life, and they dim faster the harder they are driven. A patch that has spent hundreds of hours displaying a bright static element ages ahead of its neighbours, and the difference becomes visible as a shadow on plain backgrounds.

So the question is not "did I leave something on screen too long today". It is "how many cumulative hours has this specific patch spent driven hard".

What actually matters

Brightness has the most leverage

Ageing rate rises with drive level. Running at a comfortable brightness rather than maximum extends panel life more than any change to what you play or how you play it.

On a handheld this is easier than on a television, because the screen is close to your face and maximum brightness is rarely necessary indoors. Auto-brightness, where the device offers it, does this for you.

Static and bright is the combination

Neither alone is the problem. A static element that is dark ages slowly. A bright element that moves around spreads the wear.

The risk is the intersection: a fixed, bright interface element in the same pixels for hundreds of hours. Health bars, minimaps, persistent HUDs and — on a handheld used as a general computer — a taskbar or a dock.

Where a game or the system offers to hide or fade interface elements, that is the setting doing real work rather than a cosmetic preference.

Docking removes panel hours entirely

The most effective single change available, and it is free if you already dock.

Playing on an external screen means the handheld's own panel is not lit at all. If a meaningful share of your play happens at a desk or a television, that share contributes nothing to panel ageing.

Vary what is on screen, without ceremony

Different games place their interfaces differently, so ordinary variety spreads wear naturally. That is usually enough.

What is not worth doing is elaborate avoidance — running slideshows, or refusing to play one game. Cumulative hours at high brightness is the mechanism, and a normal mixed play pattern at sensible brightness is not a problem.

Screen protectors do nothing for this

Worth saying plainly, because they are the obvious purchase and they are the wrong one.

Burn-in happens in the panel, beneath any film. A protector prevents scratches, and a matte one cuts reflections — which lets you run lower brightness in bright surroundings, and that is a real if indirect benefit.

Heat is a separate ageing factor

Sustained heat is unkind to displays as well as to chips, which is one more reason a handheld run hot for long periods is not doing itself favours.

The mistake to avoid

Treating retention as damage. It is the single most common OLED panic, it resolves by itself with ordinary use, and reacting to it by buying a protector or changing how you play addresses nothing. Give it a day of varied content before concluding anything.

The second mistake is running at maximum brightness because the screen looks better that way. It is the one variable with real leverage over how long the panel lasts, it is free to change, and on a device held at arm's length it costs you very little to turn down.
