Brake Fluid Moisture Testers
Brake fluid absorbs water from the air and the boiling point falls as it does. A cheap tester turns an invisible service item into something you can see.

A bad reading is a reason to change the fluid sooner. A good reading is never a reason to change it later. That asymmetry is the whole correct use of this tool, and it is the part people get backwards.

The problem, as it appears
Brake fluid is the service item with no symptom. It is not consumed, the level barely moves, nothing warns you, and the car stops perfectly well right up until the one occasion it does not.
So it gets deferred — not through carelessness, but because nothing ever asks for it.
Why "it stops fine" disappoints
Because the failure this prevents does not appear in ordinary driving.
Glycol brake fluid is hygroscopic: it attracts and holds water from the air, deliberately. Dispersed moisture is safer than water pooling as droplets in the lowest, hottest corners of the system, so the design accepts absorption as the lesser problem.
The consequence is that the boiling point falls steadily over time. Under normal braking that changes nothing you can feel. Under sustained heat — a long descent, repeated hard stops, a loaded vehicle — fluid that has absorbed enough water can boil, and vapour compresses where liquid does not.
The pedal goes long or soft precisely when you are asking most of it. That is the whole reason for the interval, and it is invisible until it is not.
What actually matters
What the tester measures, and what it does not
The common electronic pens infer water content from the fluid's conductivity, which rises as moisture accumulates.
That makes them quick, cheap and approximate — entirely adequate for the question being asked, which is "is this fluid in reasonable condition or should it be changed". It is not a laboratory measurement and it does not need to be.

The chemistry limit is the one to check first
These testers are for the glycol family. Silicone DOT 5 does not absorb water the same way, so a conductivity reading on it means nothing.
Confirm what your car actually uses before trusting any number — and note that DOT 5 and DOT 5.1 are different fluids despite the names, which is a genuinely unhelpful piece of naming.
A good reading does not buy you time
This is the misuse worth naming.
The service interval exists because the fluid degrades with time and use, and moisture content is one indicator of that rather than the whole picture. Contamination, additive depletion and the condition of seals do not show up in a conductivity reading.
So: a bad reading brings the change forward. A good reading leaves the schedule exactly where it was.
Colour is not a measurement
Fluid can darken from contamination without being waterlogged, and can hold significant moisture while still looking acceptable.
Dark fluid is a prompt to look further. It is not a test, and treating it as one is how people conclude clean-looking fluid must be fine.
Test at the reservoir, and know its limits
A reservoir reading samples the fluid at the top of the system. The fluid that matters most for boiling is down at the calipers, where the heat is — and that is generally the oldest, most contaminated fluid in the car.
So the reservoir reading is a useful screen and a slightly optimistic one, which is another reason it argues for changing rather than for waiting.
Where it fits in the year
Two moments make sense: before a trip involving sustained descents, and as part of recommissioning a car that has stood.
A car coming out of long storage is the clearest case — moisture has had uninterrupted time to accumulate and nothing has been circulating. That belongs with the rest of a classic's first inspection after long storage, and seasonally with the first drive of the year checklist.
Doing the change itself
Not a job to improvise. Brake fluid strips paint, absorbs moisture from the air while the container is open, and the system has to be bled correctly afterwards.
Manual fluid transfer pump
Keep one pump for brake fluid and nothing else — residue from another fluid contaminates it and ruins its properties.

The mistake to avoid
Using a good reading to postpone a service. The tester measures one property, at the coolest and newest point in the system, and the interval accounts for several others. Reading it as permission inverts the instrument's only sensible use.
The second mistake is testing fluid the tester was not made for. Silicone DOT 5 gives a reading that looks like data and is not, and the names are close enough that this happens genuinely rather than carelessly. Check the cap, the manual or the reservoir marking before you believe a number.
