Do not turn the key. What to check before the engine is asked to run, in the order that stops a stored car destroying itself in the first ten seconds.

Do not turn the key. Almost all the avoidable damage from recommissioning a stored car happens in the first ten seconds of the first start, and every one of those failures is preventable by an inspection that costs an afternoon.

The problem, as it appears

The car has been standing for years. It looks broadly fine, it has a battery on it or nearby, and the obvious next step is to see whether it runs.

That step is the one worth resisting, because the engine is the part least able to tolerate being asked first.

Why "see if it starts" disappoints

Because starting it is a test that can fail destructively.

An engine that has stood has no oil film left on its bearing surfaces — oil drains away over months. It may have moisture sitting in a cylinder. Its fuel may have turned to varnish, and the fuel system may deliver that varnish to everything downstream.

Cranking it under those conditions puts a dry engine under load and asks a degraded fuel system to supply it. That is how a car needing recommissioning becomes a car needing an engine, and it happens faster than any warning appears.

The order that matters

1. Look before touching anything

Rodents, damp and time. Check for nesting material in the airbox and around the loom, chewed wiring, and corrosion at every connector you can reach. Look underneath for fluid that has arrived rather than fluid that has always been there.

Anything with a chewed insulation jacket gets repaired before the electrical system is energised.

2. Fluids, and what they have become

Oil first: level, and whether it looks like oil or like mayonnaise. Coolant: level, colour, and whether it has gelled. Brake fluid: level and colour, though colour alone will not tell you its moisture content.

Old engine oil is changed before the engine runs, not after. Whatever acidic content it holds has been sitting against bearing surfaces for years and there is no reason to circulate it.

3. Fuel, which is probably not fuel any more

Petrol oxidises, and ethanol-blended fuel absorbs water. After a long lay-up the tank contents are usually a disposal problem rather than a starting fluid, and running them through the system spreads gum and possibly corrosion.

4. Turn it over without letting it fire

This is the step that saves engines and the one people skip.

With the ignition disabled so the engine cannot start, crank it in short bursts and let the oil pump do its work. On many engines you can confirm pressure is rising before anything combusts. The aim is a film of oil on surfaces that have been dry for years, established before the engine is under its own power.

If the engine will not turn by hand or on the starter, stop. A seized engine forced with a starter motor is a bigger problem than a seized engine left alone.

5. Compression, before you rely on it

If the engine turns freely and you want to know what you have, this is the cheap moment to find out — a low or wildly uneven cylinder changes the plan before you have spent anything on making it run nicely.

6. Electrical, with a meter rather than by trial

A battery that has stood is usually finished, and fitting a good battery to a car with a corroded earth path just moves the confusion. Check the return path with a voltage drop test rather than assuming.

7. Brakes, before the first metre

The system most degraded by standing, and the one where discovering a problem by driving is unacceptable.

Fluid absorbs moisture over time. Flexible hoses perish from the inside. Pistons seize in bores, and a seized caliper both drags and brakes unevenly. A car that starts is not a car that stops — and this is the part of the inspection worth handing to someone competent if there is any doubt.

8. Tyres, by date rather than by appearance

Rubber ages on a clock. A tyre with plenty of tread that has held one position for years may have flat spots and sidewall cracking, and the age code moulded into the sidewall matters more than how it looks.

Budget for replacement rather than inspection.

The mistake to avoid

Starting it to see where you stand. It is the most natural first move and it converts an unknown into a potentially expensive known, in seconds, with no opportunity to intervene. Everything in this list is cheaper than the outcome it prevents.

The second mistake is treating a successful start as the finish line. An engine that runs tells you nothing about the brakes, the tyres or the fuel lines, and the moment a car moves under its own power those become the things that matter. Once it is running and safe, the seasonal routine takes over in the first drive of the year checklist.

Questions people actually ask

Why not just try starting it?
Because the damage happens in the first few seconds. An engine that has stood for years has no oil film on its bearing surfaces, may have moisture in a cylinder, and may be full of fuel that has turned to varnish. Cranking it before establishing that those are dealt with is how a car that needed recommissioning becomes a car that needs rebuilding.
What is the single most important step?
Getting oil pressure before combustion. Turning the engine over without letting it fire — with the ignition disabled — circulates oil onto surfaces that have been dry for a long time. It costs a few minutes and it is the difference between wear and damage.
How do I know if the brakes are safe?
You do not, until they have been inspected properly, and this is the system most degraded by standing. Fluid absorbs moisture, flexible hoses perish internally, and pistons seize in bores. A car that starts is not a car that stops, and the brakes deserve inspection before the first metre rather than after it.
Is the old fuel usable?
Rarely, after a long lay-up. Petrol oxidises and, with ethanol content, absorbs water — the result gums carburettors and injectors and can be corrosive. Draining and disposing of it properly is normal recommissioning work rather than a precaution.
What about the tyres?
Treat them as replaceable rather than checkable. Rubber ages on a clock regardless of tread depth, and a tyre that has held one position for years has flat spots and possibly sidewall cracking. Age codes are moulded into the sidewall, and they matter more than how the tyre looks.
Should I do this myself?
The inspection, largely yes. The brakes and anything structural deserve a competent second opinion before the car is driven on a road, because the failure modes there are not ones you discover gradually.
