The Ullman A-2T is the right tool for one specific question — what does the back of this look like? — and a poor tool for most of the questions people hope it will answer. It is a 7/8 inch mirror on a stainless handle that goes from 6 inches to 18-5/8. The reason to name it over a generic telescoping inspection mirror is not the mirror. It is that Ullman publishes real figures and is careful about what it does not claim.

The problem it addresses
Most of what goes wrong on a car is visible, and a surprising amount of it is visible only from an angle your head does not fit into. A fastener behind a manifold. A weep on the far side of a casting that could be the pump or could be the hose above it. A part number stamped on the side of a component that faces the bulkhead — the exact problem in finding parts for a car nobody stocks.
None of those need a camera. They need a reflective surface small enough to get in and a handle long enough to reach, and a pocket mirror answers them in about four seconds.
What it does well
It fits. 7/8 inch is the whole point. A larger mirror is more useful in open space and cannot get into the gaps where you actually need one, and this category's mistake is buying the bigger one.
The published range is honest. 6 inches closed is short enough for a shirt pocket with the clip, 18-5/8 extended is long enough to reach across an engine bay from the wing.
Stainless, with a clip. Not a performance claim — it is a survival claim. Small tools die from being left damp and wiped with solvent, and the clip decides whether the mirror is on you or in the bottom of a drawer.

A thin steel stick with a small mirror on the end. It looks like a dentist's tool and it is not trying to be anything else. Nothing here is ugly in the way this site usually means it; it is simply plain.
Where it stops being the right tool
Ullman does not claim the joint holds its angle, and we are not going to claim it either. Its page says the mirror "can be adjusted to nearly any angle" and stops there. That is a statement about adjustability, not about retention, and those are different properties — a joint that moves freely enough to set one-handed is a joint that can creep under the mirror's own weight when you reach.
This is worth stating plainly because our own record asserted the opposite until recently. It said the tool had an "all-angle ball joint stated to hold position". Ullman states no such thing; the claim had crept in from somewhere else and has been corrected. If holding matters to you, treat it as unverified.
Amazon's listing and Ullman's page disagree about the handle. The listing title says 4-1/2 to 18 inches; Ullman says 6 to 18-5/8. We use the manufacturer's numbers. The gap is small and the direction matters more than the size: it collapses less far than the listing implies, which is the dimension you care about if it is going in a pocket.
There is no light on it, which sounds trivial and is the most common reason a mirror ends up unused. Looking behind a manifold means aiming a mirror with one hand and a torch with the other, while your head is somewhere it should not be. A head torch fixes this; a magnetic pickup tool with an LED fixes the retrieval version of the same problem.
And the image is reversed, which every mirror does and nobody mentions. Reading a stamped part number is fine. Guiding a tool with one takes practice, and the first few attempts will go the wrong way.
Who should buy it, and who should not
Buy it if your recurring frustration is confirming something — a fastener, a leak's origin, a number — that sits just around a corner you can already reach. For that it is fast, cheap and lives in a pocket.
Skip it if the real question is inside something. A cylinder bore, a sealed box section, the space behind a trim panel: no mirror reaches any of those, and a borescope does.

Would we buy it again?
Yes, with the joint caveat above held honestly. It is inexpensive, it is the correct size rather than the impressive size, and the manufacturer publishes figures it can stand behind and declines to publish one it cannot — which, in a category full of unfalsifiable claims, is the most useful thing a maker can do.

- A magnetic pickup tool with an LED
- If the actual job is retrieving a dropped fastener rather than reading something, the light and the magnet on one shaft beats a mirror and a torch in two hands.
