For anyone who cleans more than one machine a year, the electric duster wins, and it is not close on cost. The one condition that flips it is storage: it is a brick that needs a shelf and a charge, and if neither exists, a can that lives in a drawer is the better tool.

The short version
If you own a desktop, a console and a keyboard worth cleaning, the duster pays for itself and never runs out mid-job. If you clean one PC each spring and store everything in one drawer, buy a can. If the dust is compacted rather than loose, neither of these is your first purchase — a brush is.

Where the money actually goes
The duster is a one-off against a recurring cost. A single thorough clean of a neglected desktop can empty most of a can, and a year of a console, a desktop and a keyboard is several. The crossover comes fast enough that anyone cleaning quarterly is past it within a year.
The can is buying convenience, not air. What it actually sells is not having to store or charge anything, and being able to throw it in a bag. Those are real and they are the entire case for it.
Neither is buying cleaning power. This is the thing both product categories are marketed on and it is the least important axis. Loose dust comes off with either. Compacted dust comes off with neither.
Where the cheaper option genuinely wins
- One machine, once a year. The duster's advantage is amortisation, and there is nothing to amortise across.
- No storage. A brick with a cable is a real imposition on a small flat.
- Noise-sensitive households. A duster is loud in a way that rules out evenings in a shared space.
- Taking it somewhere. For a LAN event or a friend's machine, a can is trivially portable.
- Precision work. A can with a straw delivers a narrow, low-volume stream that is easier to aim into a small gap than a duster's nozzle at full flow.
Where the cheaper option falls short
- The last third of the can does noticeably less than the first, exactly when the job is least finished.
- Tilting dispenses liquid. Awkward angles inside a case are precisely where this happens.
- The cost accumulates invisibly, one can at a time, which is why people underestimate it.
- It is a consumable in a role that recurs forever. Dust is not a problem that gets solved.
The decision, plainly
- One desktop, cleaned annually, small flat → canned air, kept upright.
- Desktop plus console plus peripherals, cleaned two or more times a year → electric duster.
- Cleaning in a garage or outdoors, where noise does not matter → electric duster, comfortably.
- Compacted dust on heatsinks → a brush first, then either of these for the loose remainder.
- A workshop compressor already on site → use it, with a moisture trap and the pressure well down.

When blowing is the wrong verb
Both options on this page move dust somewhere else. In a garage or outdoors that is the whole job. On a desk, in a car footwell, or over a keyboard with the caps off, it means the debris lands nearby and you deal with it twice.
A blow-and-vacuum hybrid does both in one body, and the compromise is the obvious one: it is not as strong at either job as a dedicated tool. HOTO's AutoCare states 20,000 Pa of suction and 50 m/s of airflow from a 2,500 mAh battery in a 352 g body — figures which put it well below a mains vacuum and below a corded blower, and which are the point rather than a criticism. It is a glovebox tool.
Two things to know before quoting its numbers. The manufacturer's own page says "up to 30 minutes" in its specifications and "35 mins" in its image captions. And the per-mode breakdown quoted almost everywhere — 8,000, 15,000 and 20,000 Pa against 35, 14 and 10 minutes — appears on marketplace listings and not on the manufacturer's page at all.

A hybrid, not an upgrade. Right for light car-interior debris, desk crumbs and a keyboard with the caps already off. Wrong for a heatsink packed with felted dust, deep carpet, or anything wet — those want a brush first and a real vacuum after.
