The problem, as it appears

A screen that has become hazy, or has a cloudy patch that will not wipe off, or shows blotches visible only on dark scenes. Frequently this appears after months of cleaning with whatever was under the sink, and the connection is not obvious because each individual clean seemed to work.

That delay is what makes this worth writing about. The coating does not fail in one wipe. It degrades gradually, and by the time it is visible the cause has become routine.

Why glass cleaner disappoints

Because a monitor is not glass. A window is a bare surface and can take an aggressive solvent indefinitely. A modern panel has a thin optical coating on its outer layer — anti-reflective, sometimes anti-fingerprint — which is the part doing the work of making the screen readable.

Ammonia and strong alcohols attack that layer. It is not immediate and it is not uniform, which is why the result is patchy rather than a clean failure. Once it has gone there is no repair; a matte film can cover the appearance, at the cost of the sharpness discussed in reducing monitor glare in a bright room.

What actually matters

That nothing abrasive is dragged across it. Loose grit under a cloth is the mechanism behind fine scratches, and it is why dry dusting comes before any wet step.

That the liquid is mild. Distilled water covers most cleaning. Purpose-made screen solutions are formulated to be safe on coatings. Anything from under the kitchen sink is a gamble with a permanent downside.

That the cloth is damp, not the screen. Liquid sprayed directly at a panel runs down into the gap between panel and bezel, and the driver electronics sit behind the bottom edge. This is the one failure mode here that can kill a monitor outright rather than just marking it.

That pressure is minimal. LCD layers are not rigid, and pressing produces pooling marks that are usually temporary and occasionally are not.

The options, and who each suits

A microfibre cloth and distilled water suits almost everyone and costs almost nothing. Two cloths is the useful refinement — one damp, one dry to follow — because it removes the streaking that makes people reach for something stronger.

Cleaning putty suits the bezel joint and the crevices around it, which a cloth compacts rather than clears. It presses in, lifts dust out, and is the right tool for the one part of this job a cloth handles badly.

A soft brush with a vacuum held nearby does the same job as putty for anyone who already owns both, and covers the vents on the back at the same time.

The mistake to avoid

Spraying the screen directly. It is the habit from cleaning windows and it is the one that can end a monitor rather than merely marking it — liquid tracks down the panel, collects in the bottom bezel gap, and the electronics are immediately behind it. Spray the cloth, every time, and keep it damp rather than wet.

The second mistake is using a paper towel. Paper is wood fibre, it is more abrasive than it feels, and on a coated panel it produces exactly the fine scratch pattern that shows up under a bright reflection later. Microfibre or nothing.

Can you use glass cleaner on a monitor?
No. Most contain ammonia or strong alcohols, which break down the anti-reflective coating on modern panels. The damage appears as cloudy or blotchy patches that cannot be reversed, and it usually shows up some cleans after the one that caused it.
Is distilled water enough?
