Is a Monitor Calibration Tool Worth It?

The problem, as it appears
Colours that look different between two monitors, or a photo that printed wrong, or a video that looked fine on one screen and wrong on another. The word calibration comes up, and the devices are not cheap.
For a gaming setup, the underlying question is usually "is my monitor showing me the right colours", and the honest answer is that it does not much matter unless something downstream depends on it.
Why software calibration disappoints
Because it asks you to judge. Software calibrators present test patterns and ask which looks neutral, and your judgement is being made through the very screen being assessed, in whatever light the room happens to have, by eyes that adapt continuously.
It can correct something obviously wrong — a strong colour cast, a wildly incorrect gamma. It cannot measure, and measurement is the thing a hardware device provides.
What actually matters
Whether anything depends on the colour being right. This is the whole question. If the output stays on your own screen, accuracy has no consumer. If it goes to print, to a client, or to a platform where other people view it, it does.
The room's lighting. A calibrated screen viewed under a warm bulb still looks warm, because your eyes adapt to the dominant light. Serious colour work implies controlling room light too, which is a larger commitment than the device.
Panel capability. Calibration brings a monitor to its own best accuracy. It cannot make a panel display colours outside its physical range, so a budget screen calibrated is still a budget screen with correct settings.
Drift over time. Backlights age and panels shift over months, so this is a recurring task rather than a one-off. That changes the value calculation considerably for someone who would use it once.

A colorimeter suits anyone whose work leaves the screen. It measures rather than asks, produces a profile the operating system applies, and answers the question properly.

Borrowing one suits someone who wants a baseline without owning the device. Calibration profiles persist, so a single session gives most of the benefit for a screen that is not doing daily colour work.
Using the manufacturer's profile suits everyone else. Most monitors ship with a reasonable factory profile and several picture modes, and the sRGB mode on a decent screen is usually close enough for anything that is not professional.
Fixing the room first suits everyone, and is where the actual visible problem usually is. A screen fighting a window or an overhead light produces a much larger perceived colour shift than any calibration error — reducing monitor glare in a bright room covers that, and it costs far less.

The mistake to avoid
Calibrating a screen and then gaming on the calibrated profile expecting it to look better. It will look flatter, because accurate is not the same as pleasing, and game developers grade against consumer displays with consumer saturation. Keep a calibrated profile for work and a preferred profile for games — every operating system supports switching, and most monitors have separate picture modes.
The second mistake is calibrating a screen that has never been cleaned properly. A hazy or streaked panel affects perceived contrast more than a profile does, and it is free to fix — cleaning a monitor without damaging the coating covers doing it without making it worse.
